New This Issue
This week I’d like to start off by congratulating by friend and webmaster Marc Rohrer (without whom you would not be receiving The Health Plus Letter) and his wife Grace for becoming parents with the birth of their twin son and daughter. Please joining me in wishing Marc and his family many Blessings.
This issue I’m sharing an update on The Rinse Formula, which I first wrote about last year (sometime in June, I believe). Recently I was contacted by one of Dr. Rinse’s daughters, Margaret Grove, who corrected me on some errors that my first article contained and, more importantly, provided me with the exact list of ingredients for the formula that her father wrote down for her. I encourage you to read what Margaret shared with me. Doing so could potentially save your life.
Also in this issue, I discuss a number of diagnostic tests used by alternative and integrative physicians to detect cancer. They, too, can be lifesavers.
I’m also calling your attention to two pieces of legislation—one in the House, the other in the Senate—that, if passed, could conceivably make organic farming in the US illegal. Please be sure to take action on this if you live in the States.
And you’ll also find a recipe for a delicious vegetable soup, plus my latest recommendations.
As always, if you like what you read, please feel free to share this issue with others and invite them to join you as a subscriber to the Health Plus Letter. Thanks for reading!

The Real Rinse Formula For A Healthy Heart
In a past issue of The Health Plus Letter, I wrote an article about a nutritional formula that was developed by Dr. Jacobus Rinse and therefore known as the Rinse Formula. In that article, I wrote that Dr. Rinse developed a life-threatening case of heart disease when he was in his fifties and that he developed his formula out of necessity. The formula helped Dr. Rinse to reverse his condition and go on to live for many more years.
Recently, I received an email from one of Dr. Rinse’s daughters. Her name is Margaret Grove and she’s a biostatistical analyst at Darmouth University. Here is what she initially wrote me:
“I am one of Dr Jacobus Rinse's daughters and want to let you know that you have an incorrect version of his story and his formula! It looks like it probably came from Andrew Saul's web site.
First, he had a mild heart attack at the age of 51 and was not in terrible health. Secondly, using an oil such as olive oil is most definitely not part of the formula. The primary parts of his formula that are crucial are: lecithin granules, cold-pressed safflower or sunflower oil (or other oil containing linoleic acid), and about 200 IU of vitamin E to prevent free-radical formation by oxidation of the oil. If you don't have the combination of lecithin granules and lineoleic acid, the formula won't work. I have his original formula that he gave me directly.
I'm seeing a number of perversions of his formula that will not do what it is supposed to.”
I was very happy to receive Margaret’s email, as well as chagrined for the errors in my original article (and Andrew Saul was one of the sources I relied on—his book, not his website—as well as other sources of information that I found online). I invited Margaret to send me any additional information about her father and his formula. Here is her subsequent reply:
“Dear Larry,
Thanks so much for being open to my comments! I really appreciate your willingness to listen. It's so easy for formulas to be changed in the retelling so I'm copying below the exact formula he [Dr. Rinse] gave me when he was 88 years old (in 1988):
1 tbsp soy lecithin granules
1 tbsp raw wheat germ
1 tbsp brown sugar (or blackstrap molasses or honey)
1 tbsp debittered brewer’s yeast
1 tbsp cold-pressed safflower oil (or sunflower or corn oil)
1/2 tsp bone meal powder (or supplement of 500 mg calcium orotate and
500 mg magnesium orotate)
Mix the above and sprinkle over cereal, or mix with yogurt, or stir into juice, etc. Some people may need to start with smaller amounts of yeast and wheat germ and increase the amount gradually.
In addition, the following supplements should be included (straight from my father’s directions):
1 multi-vitamin and mineral tablet
1 gram Vitamin C (ascorbic acid or calcium ascorbate)
50 mg Vitamin B6
300 mg magnesium orotate or magnesium oxide or magnesium hyroxide
50 mg zinc orotate or zinc gluconate or 30 mg zinc oxide
200 IU Vitamin E (take before bedtime, several hours after a meal).
50 mcg selenium
Note that vitamin E is especially important when consuming vegetable oils.
To add my personal preference: I don’t use the sweetener or brewer’s yeast.
It’s my understanding that the things that are absolutely essential are: lecithin, safflower or sunflower oil and vitamin E. Apparently the lecithin and linoleic acid (from the oil) combine to form the key to dissolving cholesterol deposits and preventing them from forming. When taking the oil, my father said that vitamin E is essential to prevent free-radical formation from oxidation. I believe the specific vitamins are related to various chemical reactions in the body.
At one time there was a pre-packaged mix available commercially (my father had no financial interest in this although he did provide some assistance to them at no charge) called ‘The Dr Rinse Breakfast’. Since there were obvious issues in using oils in that context, they opted to grind sunflower seeds and use that instead of the oil. I believe that my father thought that was a reasonable substitution. I've heard of using ground flax seed also but don't know the specifics of the quantity of linoleic acid in that.
I don’t have the medical knowledge to make recommendations so I am passing this along because of your interest. It seems to have helped me and I know my father used to receive many letters from grateful users of his ‘breakfast’.”
I greatly appreciate Margaret’s willingness to correct my mistakes and share her father’s real formula. My hope is that, like me, you will try it for yourself and see if it helps you too.

Alternative Diagnostic Tests For Detecting Cancer
Integrative and alternative physicians have recognized the potential shortcomings of conventional cancer screening tests for decades. As a result, they have turned their attention to finding and making use of the most viable alternative screening methods. What follows are overviews of the most effective of these screening methods.
BioFocus Blood Test—This innovative blood test, which is available from the BioFocus laboratory in Recklinghausen, Germany, is one of the most effective screening methods for cancer anywhere in the world. Moreover, the BioFocus Blood Test, also known as the Molecular Tumor Diagnostics Test, is an essential tool for helping oncologists and other physicians to best determine the most effective course of treatment for each individual patient. By using the BioFocus Test to determine the most appropriate course of action for each of their patients, physicians are able to most effectively achieve remission of cancer while simultaneously sparing their patients of harmful side effects. Even if chemotherapy is found to be necessary to treat cancer, the BioFocus Test allows physicians to both select the most appropriate type of chemotherapy and combine it with effective alternative treatment methods. This, in turn, means that much lower than normal doses of chemotherapy need to be used to target and kill cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells undamaged. This alone makes the BioFocus Test something that all cancer patients and their physicians should consider, given how toxic and debilitating conventional applications of chemotherapy are.
The BioFocus Test is based on molecular genetics. It works by screening a sample of a patient’s blood for a wide parameter of genetic molecular markers associated with cancer cells and tumors, while also screening for disseminated cancer cells in the bloodstream Such cells are typically non-detectable by all conventional cancer screening tests until they start to clump together and form tumors. As a result, the BioFocus test is capable of detecting cancer in its earliest stages, often many months, and in some cases years, before conventional cancer blood and other screening tests.
Just as importantly, the BioFocus test allows physicians to determine what type of cancer is present, even at its earliest stage, in a safe, effective, and noninvasive manner. The reason for this is that specific types of cancer have their own specific genetic markers, or gene coding. For example, the gene codings for prostate cancer can be detected in the blood sample itself by the BioFocus Test, without the need for the far less accurate PSA test.
Another valuable feature of the BioFocus Test is the fact that, once it detects cancer cells and determines which type of cancer is present in the body, it is then able to measure the cancer’s specific metabolic properties and resistance factors. By doing so, it enables physicians to then determine which treatment approaches, including chemotherapy, should it be necessary, will most effectively target and destroy a patient’s specific type of cancer. In essence then, the BioFocus Test makes it possible to individualize each cancer patient’s treatment plan, tailor-making it to their unique needs and the specific makeup of the cancer they have.
Until recently, the BioFocus Test was only available in Germany. Now, however, people in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere can also take advantage of it. All that is required for them to do so is to have a sample of their blood drawn and sent to the BioFocus lab, which will then test the blood sample and provide a full report on their findings, including the best course of treatment.
For more information about the BioFocus Test, including how to draw and prepare blood for shipment to the clinic, contact my friend Burton Goldberg via his website: www.burtongoldberg.com.
Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay—The Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay is a diagnostic test developed by Dr. Robert A. Nagourney, M.D., a board-certified oncologist, heatologist, and pharmacology professor, and founding medical director of Rational Therapeutics of Long Beach, California. Although the Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay is not used to screen for cancer, once cancer has been detected, it can be highly effective in screening for and determining which therapeutic agents can most effectively treat each person’s specific type of cancer. In essence, the Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay helps physicians to know which conventional and alternative cancer treatments will be most successful at causing cancer cells and tumors to die.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of cancer cells, as opposed to normal cells, is that they do not readily undergo apoptosis, the programmed cell death that is inherent to healthy cells. One of the reasons conventional cancer treatments so often fail is that they are concerned with stopping cancer cells and tumors from further growing. When cancer cell and tumor growth slows or stops, oncologists consider this to be a success, when in fact it usually is little more than a delay of the inevitable death that occurs in the majority of cancer cases that are treated conventionally. Alternative physicians understand that the key to successfully treated cancer lies both in addressing and resolving all of the underlying factors that cause a patient’s specific cancer while simultaneously getting cancer cells to die, not just simply stop growing.
Physicians who elect to use the Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay send a living tissue sample of cancer cells (obtained either by a biopsy, in the case of cancer tumors, or a blood sample, in the case of leukemias) to Dr. Nagourney’s laboratory. There, pieces of the specimen are exposed to a wide range of chemotherapeutic agents, as well as other drugs, along with a wide range of alternative remedies that have the potential to kill cancer cells. The Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay then provides Dr. Nagourney and his colleagues with a clear indication of which substances will be most effective for treating the particular cancer that has been tested. In short, the Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay makes it possible for physicians to know in advance of the treatment they are considering whether or not it will work. The goal of the test is to discover which substances cause cancer cells to die off within 72 to 96 hours after the cells are exposed to the therapeutic agents while the cancer specimen in grown in a test tube. In this way, the Ex Vivo Apoptotic Assay provides objective evidence of the likelihood that a specific drug or other anti-cancer agent will work when administered to the person from which the cancer specimen is derived. This, in turn, allows physicians to tailor make a customized treatment plan for each of their patients that will have the highest chance of achieving long-term success.

Darkfield Microscopy—Darkfield microscopy is rarely, if ever, used by conventional physicians and oncologists despite the fact that it can be an important tool for detecting signs of cancer in the bloodstream. Unlike conventional electron microscopy, darkfield microscropy enables physicians trained in its use to observe microscopic living organisms, including blood cells, as well as the presence of disease-causing microorganisms.
To perform this task, physicians take a drop of a patient’s blood (via a prick of the finger) and place it on a slide under a specially adapted microscope, which then projects the magnified image of the blood (usually a magnification of 1500 times) onto a video screen, where both the physician and patient can observe the bloods internal environment. In essence, the physician is observing the form and motion of the components in the blood sample, including the cells themselves. This is in stark contrast to conventional microscopy, which is based on measurements of blood samples that reveal very little about the true condition of the blood.
For example, doctors using conventional microscopy and other forms of blood testing will often seek to obtain a total white blood count (WBC) of a patient’s immune cells known as neutrophils. Using such methods, they may receive a WBC that falls within the normal range, causing them to assume that their patient is normal and free of disease. Using darkfield microscopy, however, physicians are able to easily see if the neutrophils actually appear normal or have abnormalities consistent with cancer and other disease states. In addition to revealing distortions in the shapes of the cells themselves, darkfield microscopy also shows whether cells are properly moving or are lifeless and immobilized. It can also detect free radical damage and whether there is cell leakage from within the cellular walls due to cell-wall deficiencies.
All of these factors, while not providing definitive proof of cancer, nonetheless are indications that cancer or other disease may be present. Once they are observed, physicians can then order follow-up tests. In this way, cancer can often be detected much earlier than conventional screening tests usually allow for. Equally important, once cancer treatments are begun, continued darkfield blood analysis can provide physicians with solid indications of whether or not their treatment approach is working, based upon whether or not there are positive changes occurring as follow-up blood samples are observed.
Electrodermal Screen (EDS)—A basic theory of energy medicine holds that all disease states first start to manifest within the electromagnetic energy field that surrounds all living life forms, including human beings. Only after these energetic imbalances persist for some time does disease, including cancer, begin to appear in the physical body. Electrodermal screening is a sophisticated method of diagnostic testing that enables physicians trained in its use to detect alterations in a person’s energy field that are indicative of disease, including cancer. Given how important the human energy field is to overall health, failing to screen for changes in the energy field is not only foolish, it can also be life-threatening. For this reason, today many conventional medical tests employ some form of energy testing devices for diagnostic purposes, such as EKG (electrocardiogram) which measures the electrical activity of the heart; EEG (electroencephalogram) which measures the electrical activity of the brain); and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), which provides doctors with an energetic “picture” of the body’s internal organs. Despite the use of such energy-based diagnostic methods, however, conventional medicine refuses to acknowledge the value of EDS devices, all of which are able to detect energy imbalances much earlier than conventional screening tests.
Most EDS devices work by measuring changes in the flow of energy along energetic pathways in the body known in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as meridians. According to TCM theory, different organs in the body correspond with specific meridians, with disturbances in the latter providing indications of health problems in the organs. EDS devices are able to detect and measure these disturbances and imbalances in the meridians, and are also capable of detecting the shifts in energy production that occur when cells in the body start to be affected by inflammation, one of the primary physical causes of cancer.
The use of EDS not only enables physicians to detect cancer and other diseases sooner and more accurately than most forms of conventional medical testing, but also enables physicians to determine whether or not the treatment methods are working. EDS can even help physicians determine what specific nutrients, herbs, and other natural substances should me used (including in what dosage range) to support primary cancer treatments.
Note: Like many other energy medicine tools and techniques, EDS devices, in my experience, tend to be very “practitioner dependent,” meaning that it takes a skilled practitioner with years of experience to obtain truly accurate readings. Therefore, if you are interested in working with an EDS practitioner, be sure to first determine his or her skill level, including asking how long the practitioner has worked with EDS.
Hemoccult Test—Colorectal cancer (cancer of either the colon or rectum) is the second most common type of cancer in the U.S. Approximately 20 percent of cancer deaths in the U.S. are due to colorectal cancer and almost 50 percent of all colorectal patients die from it, in large part due to the fact that most colorectal cancer cases are diagnosed at a late stage. When colon and rectal cancers are detected early, however, preventing their progression is usually easily accomplished, even when patients rely solely on conventional cancer treatments. Therefore, like all other forms of cancer, early detection of colorectal cancer is extremely important.
An effective way of screening for colorectal cancer is known as the hemoccult test. The name hemoccult means “hidden blood,” and the test itself self screens for hidden blood in the feces. It is conducted on a sample of collected feces and screens for hemoglobin, a primary component of human blood. A positive finding of hemoglobin will usually result in further diagnostic tests being ordered, such as a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, in order to screen for potentially cancerous polyps or tumors in the colon or rectum.
Although the hemoccult test is a conventional cancer test, it is also employed by alternative cancer practitioners because of its general effectiveness. However, the hemoccult test is not always accurate, and false-positive readings can occur if patients eat fresh fruits or vegetables and/or red meats prior to testing. Aspirin, iron tablets, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and large doses of vitamin C can also result in false-positive readings.
Thermography—Thermography is a safe and effective screening test for cancer that has been in use for more than 40 years in both the United States and Europe. Because it is both nontoxic and highly accurate—as well as inexpensive—alternative cancer specialists are increasingly turning to thermography over screening tests such as X-rays and mamograms, which aren’t as accurate and which can also cause cancer because of the ionizing radiation they emit.
Thermography measures the emissions of infrared heat from various areas of the body. When it comes to detecting cancer, this is significant, since cancer cells and tumors emit more heat than normal cells and tissues do, and do so in a noticeably unregulated manner, compared to how heat is normally emitted by healthy cells and tissues. Thermography devices are able to detect fluctuating heat emissions, displaying them on a computer monitor and enabling physicians to determine whether or not cancer is present within a patient’s body.
Thermography is particularly useful for detecting breast cancer, often up to five years earlier than mammography is capable of doing. As a result, cancers detected by thermography at an early stage of development, are much more easily treated and reversed, compared to cancers caught later by less efficient diagnostic methods, including mammography.
Thermography is a simple and noninvasive procedure that is much safer and more comfortable than mammography. It is performed with the patient standing unclothed approximately ten feet away from the thermogram device, which creates a computerized image of the body in a few minutes. Since the results are displayed instantaneously on a computer monitor, physicians can usually quickly interpret the data using image-analyzing software. No rays of any kind enter the patient’s body, nor is there any pain or compressing of the breasts, such as occurs with mammography. Moreover, while mammograms tend to be less effective at diagnosing breast cancer due to dense breast tissue, thermography is not affected by tissue densities, making for far more accurate screening.
One of the pioneers in the use of thermography to screen for cancer is Philip Hoekstra, Ph.D., founder of Thermoscan. He maintains that, given the errors, false negatives, and radiation exposure dangers that are so common to mammography, thermography should be the preferred method of breast cancer screening, at least initially. If cancer is detected, mammograms can then be used to pinpoint the location of breast tumors. Dr. Hoekstra, like most other alternative cancer specialists, believes that thermography would be the diagnostic method of choice for all women concerned about breast cancer if they only knew about it. As he puts it, “The only reason mammography is tolerated is that it is a major source of steady income for radiologists. They have come to covet it and want no competition from other approaches.” This financial greed is the same reason that so many other effective, safe, and inexpensive cancer diagnostic and treatment methods are not commonplace in the United States and most other industrialized nations.

Don’t Let Congress Criminalize Organic Farming
You can’t make this stuff up. As I write this, a bill (H.R. 875) is in committee that has the backing of at least 40 members of Congress. If passed as it is currently written, it has the potential to make organic farming illegal. I’m not kidding! Moreover, the bill is being sponsored by a congresswoman named Rosa Delauro. Delauro is married to Stan Greenburg a political strategist who is on Monsanto’s payroll (if the bill passes, Monsanto will be the primary beneficiary). Can you say conflict of interest?
Here’s just one of the reason I’m opposed to this bill and why I am asking all of my readers in the US to contact their representatives in the House telling them to oppose it too: The definition of a "FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY" (as found in the bill's "DEFINITIONS" section, SECTION 3, PARAGRAPH 14) is far too vague and it can quite easily (and intentionally?) include the backyard vegetable garden that my grandmother grows. It says: "(14) FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY- The term `food production facility' means any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation." And there are NO exclusions whatsoever to that vague and far-reaching definition.
A similar bill is also sitting in the Senate. It’s known as S 425
