Quote Of The Day

“Your body is simply a living expression of your point of view about the world.”
-- Carl Frederick

Fast Fact

There are more bacteria living on the surface of your skin than there are people living on this planet.

Your Weekly Health Tip: The Best Time To Drink Coffee

Did you know that the best time to drink coffee is not in the morning? It’s actually in the afternoon, which is when your body first starts to produce signals that can make you drowsy. Feelings of drowsiness are produced by a chemical in your body known as adenosine, which accumulates as the day progresses. Coffee blocks the effects of adenosine, which generally reaches its peak in the body by mid- to late afternoon. So having a cup of java in the afternoon could keep you more energized.

The Link Between Heart Disease, Cancer And Your Emotions

Research in the field of mind/body medicine conducted by scientists such as Dr. Hans Eysenck shows that approximately 99 percent of the people who die of cancer (as well as heart disease) suffer from chronic, serious depression, anger or a combination of both emotions. According to famed holistic physician Dr. C. Norman Shealy, the most prevalent ongoing emotion leading up to cancer is depression, while chronic anger is the most likely emotion to cause heart disease and high blood pressure. These findings parallel those of Stanford University scientists Dr. Bruce Lipton, whose research shows that chronic stress is a primary cause of more than 95 percent of all types of disease conditions. The bottom line of all this research is that effectively preventing and recovering from cancer requires healing long-standing unresolved emotional issues.

Emotional Characteristics Common to Heart Disease Patients

It’s long been known that there is a higher risk for developing heart disease in people who are known as “Type A” personalities. People who fit this psychological profile tend to be doers and achievers who “grab life with both hands.” Such people often find it difficult to relax, however. As a result, they typically are prone to stress and bothered by daily occurrences that, for most other people, would seem inconsequential and not worth worrying about. In addition, Type A people are usually judgmental, impatient, and have quick tempers. Although they do a good job of hiding it, they can also be prone to anxiety over the projects they are involved in and whether or not they will result in their desired outcomes.

Anger, anxiety, impatience, and other such emotions and psychological characteristics are not exclusive traits of Type A personalities, of course. And all of them have been found to be common among people with heart disease, especially anger and anxiety. If you find that you are prone to such emotions on a regular basis, it might be wise for you to seek out help so that you can do a better job of managing and minimizing them.

Emotional Characteristics Common to Cancer Patients

In addition to depression and chronic stress, the most common emotional characteristics of cancer patients are anxiety, fear, grief, hopelessness, indecisiveness, loneliness, and low self-esteem and lack of self-worth. Many cancer patients also live isolated lives and lack meaningful personal relationships. Other emotional issues that can act as co-factors in the cancer process include bigotry, hostility, resentment, and selfishness. Limited and erroneous beliefs can also play a significant role in how patients respond to their cancer treatments. For example, many people, upon being diagnosed with cancer, automatically assume the worst, even when there is no reason to do so. As a result, they can unconsciously sabotage their ability to recover even when they receive the most appropriate and effective types of cancer treatment.

Chronic, unresolved emotions have also been shown to significantly affect the immune system by lowering the immune response. This is of utmost importance when it comes to preventing and treating cancer since a healthy immune system is essential in both cases. Therefore, it is vitally important that all of us, whether or not we have cancer, take care to properly manage and express our emotions and to do all that is necessary to heal and recover from any unexpected shocks or traumas we may have sustained.

Are Your Emotions Making You Sick?

The following checklist of questions can help you to determine if you at risk for developing cancer, as well as various other illnesses, due to unresolved and improperly expressed emotions. Answer each question truthfully. The more Yes answers you give, the more likely it is that you need to start addressing your emotions and beliefs in order to stop them from compromising your health.

Have you endured an unexpected shock or trauma within the last 3 years (examples: death of a loved one, divorce, break up of a relationship, loss of your job, etc)?

Do you regularly experience bouts of sadness or grief?

Do you regularly experience bouts of anxiety or depression?

Are you experiencing lingering feelings of anger or resentment towards anyone or anything?

Do you suffer from low self-esteem?

Do you lack meaningful relationships in your life?

Do you spend much of your personal time by yourself?

Do you feel lonely?

Are you pessimistic by nature?

Do you harbor lingering regrets over experiences from your past?

Do you feel as if you are cut off from support from others and have to do everything on your own?

Are you prone to compromise so as not to hurt others’ feelings even when doing so means giving up on your own desires and dreams?

Do you believe that life is a struggle filled with hardships that only a few, lucky or privileged people ever escape?

Are you pessimistic about the future and the way things are going in the world?

Are you an “all work and no play” type of person?

Healing your mind and emotions requires a committed effort on your part, and may also require, at least initially, working with a trained counselor or health care practitioner trained in the field of mind/body medicine. If you feel that you require such assistance based on your responses to the above question, don’t wait to seek it out.

Professional Care
The following professional care therapies are highly effective treatments for dealing with chronic emotional conditions: Bach flower remedies, biofeedback therapy, breathwork, energy psychology, guided imagery and visualization, hypnotherapy, meditation, and other forms of mind/body medicine.

Professional counseling can also be helpful, as can certain other types of “talk therapy,” such as cognitive therapy. However, unless your emotional problems are severe and causing you to feel like a threat to yourself or others, try to avoid counselors and psychiatrists who focus on treating emotional issues with drugs—not only does this approach fail to address the deeper underlying issues that are causing your emotional problems, it is also highly toxic and can cause a host of serious side effects, including liver and kidney damage, impaired brain functioning, and even violent acts, including suicide.

Note: In many cases of mental and emotional difficulty, physical factors such as food allergies, poor diet, and nutritional deficiencies can also play a significant role. These and other physical factors should always be screened for whenever emotional or mental difficulties become chronic, as well as for all cases of heart disease and cancer.

Health and Beauty

Human beauty, as it is reflected from our appearance, is often said to be “only skin deep.” Although this saying is intended to warn us against putting too much emphasis on how we and other people look, when it comes to matters of health it isn’t true. Your skin, in terms of its tone, coloring, hydration, and other factors, reflects the overall health of your body’s cells, tissues, and organs. By examining your skin, it’s not uncommon for holistic health practitioners to make an accurate assessment of the health of such organs such as your lungs, liver, and kidneys, as well as the functioning of your circulatory, digestive, immune, and other of your body’s systems. Therefore, as far as your health is concerned, having healthy skin is far more important than many people realize.

In our culture, with its overemphasis on “youthful looking skin,” too many of us succumb to the lure of easy skin care solutions in the form of topical creams, lotions, and moisturizers and, in some case, cosmetic surgery, failing to realize that achieving both healthy skin and beauty is truly an “inside job.” After all, cosmetic surgery and the use of makeup, even skincare products that are organic or “all natural,” are incapable of addressing the various underlying imbalances that can cause skin to become unhealthy and unattractive. Fortunately, there are many simple, healthy, and quite inexpensive alternatives to such measures that you can easily make a part of your life. Doing so will enhance your health and your physical appearance. But before we discuss them, let’s take a closer look at what Beauty actually means.

Beauty From The Inside Out

Ancient philosophers such as Plato equated Beauty with Truth, and with good reason. Life is full of natural beauty. A gorgeous sunset, a magnificent waterfall, the sight of an eagle soaring heavenward, the majesty of a lone oak tree within a field—scenes such as these leave us with warm, glowing feelings of happiness and peace, quieting restless thoughts and inspiring us to be more of all that we are and are capable of achieving. The beauty that is so abundant in Nature also calls to us to live more closely in accordance with natural laws, leaving behind all thoughts and actions that create and perpetuate disharmony in ourselves and in others.

People who have consciously made a decision to live according to such principles, regardless of their physical appearance, can also have this affect on us. We have all had the experience of encountering people who, despite so-called “normal” or “plain” external features, radiate an inner beauty that attracts our gazed and admiration. Conversely, people who are born with naturally attractive features can seem unattractive and even ugly when they are not acting harmoniously. One of the primary keys to being and looking beautiful, therefore, is to cultivate mental, emotional, and spiritual growth, feeding our souls, as well as our bodies, with that which is nourishing and life-affirming.

Here are a few suggestions that you can use to create a more harmonious and healthier life that will leave you feeling and appearing more attractive.

Spend time in nature. By making it a point to spend time outdoors amidst a natural setting, you can better attune yourself to the harmonies of the natural world.

Place plants in your home and workplace. Plants not only brighten up your home and work environments, they can also help to buoy your spirits. In addition, many plants act as natural air purifiers, helping to keep your home and workplace free of indoor airborne irritants.

Take time to meditate or engage in prayerful contemplation. A large body of scientific studies proves that prayer and meditation can provide a host of physical health benefits. Just as importantly, by taking time to regularly engage in such contemplative practices, you will find that it becomes easier to attune yourself to life’s inner rhythms and become better able to tap into greater levels of intuition and spiritual guidance.

There are of course many other methods that you can use to create more harmony in your life. Find the ones that you are most comfortable with and commit to making them a regular part of your daily activities.

Beauty and Your Skin

Perhaps the most telling outward indication of your health is the condition of your skin. Skin condition is also one of the most prominent signs of physical beauty. To achieve and maintain healthy skin you need to understand how your skin, as your body’s largest organ of elimination, is directly affected by the internal health of your body. The more toxins that are present in your cells, tissues, and organs, the more likely it is that the appearance of your skin will suffer, as well. Therefore, doing all that you can to eliminate toxins is essential not only for good health, but also for looking and feeling your best. This fact is born out by the own clinical experience of Steven Bailey, ND, a well-known naturopathic physician. In Juice Alive: The Ultimate Guide to Juicing Remedies, Dr. Bailey writes that approximately 90 percent of all dermatological conditions that he has treated have significantly improved as he worked with his patients to improve their digestion and elimination. This includes cases of acne, eczema, hives, psoriasis and seborrhea which had previous proven to be intractable, despite his patients using a wide array of topical skin care products and, in certain cases, even antibiotics and steroids.

Juice Recipes for Healthy Skin

As part of his practice for improving his patients’ health, Dr. Bailey often recommends that they begin to add freshly squeezed juices as part of their daily health routine. He reports that drinking 16 to 32 ounces of organic vegetable juices each day can quickly result in noticeable improvements in skin texture and hue, as well as improved clarity of the eyes, and overall improvements in muscle tone due to the elimination of toxins that cling to fat cells. Many of Dr. Bailey’s patients report that their family, friends, and co-workers comment on how good they look as a result of this simple addition to their wellness programs.

What follows are two especially useful juice recipes that Dr. Bailey recommends for healthy skin.

Juice 3 carrots and 4 stalks of celery, or enough of each vegetable to produce 12 ounces. Drink twice daily.

Juice 3 carrots and 1 cucumber. Drink 12 ounces twice daily.

For best results, consider drinking the first juice combination in the morning, and the second combination later in the day. You can also add 1 beet and/or half a bunch of spinach to either recipe.

Another juice combination that promotes healthy skin is to juice red grapes and black currants, using twice as many grapes as currants to produce 8 ounces of juice. Drink twice daily.

Cucumber is an especially useful vegetable that can be used to maintain your skin. In addition to including cucumber juice in the juice combinations you make, you can also apply cucumber juice directly to your skin with a washcloth, and you can make a facial mask using the extracted cucumber pulp. Placing sliced cucumbers over your eyes can also help reduce bags and inflammation. This technique is a well-known traditional skin care method that today is also used in many health spas.

Healthy Eating

In addition to drinking fresh squeezed juice on a daily basis, eating healthy foods is also essential for the health of your skin. Ideally, you should eat only organic foods, with your meals consisting of at least 20 to 30 percent of raw vegetables. One of the simplest ways to ensure that you eat enough raw fruits and vegetables each day is to include a large salad made up of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables with at least one of your meals each day. Eating such salads can also help you to lose weight if you need to do so, and to keep it off without the need for dieting.

Water and Your Skin

In addition to eating healthy foods and drinking juices each day, also be sure that you daily drink adequate amounts of pure, filtered water. As it is in the rest of your body, water is the most abundant ingredient in your skin. Drinking water regularly throughout the day is one of the easiest and most effective methods you can use to maintain healthy skin, as well as increasing your energy level and improving your mood. Most of us do not consume enough water, however, resulting in chronic dehydration. Further compounding this problem, many of us regularly consume drinks that lead to even higher levels of dehydration, such as coffee, non-herbal teas, soda, and alcohol.

As a general rule of thumb, many health experts advise that we drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each and every day. This is a good starting point, although the exact amount of water that you need to drink each day is best determined by your individual biochemistry, as well as other factors, such as how often and how strenuously your exercise (the more you exercise and the more active you are, the more water you need to drink each day).

Exercise And Healthy Skin

The other essential component for helping to maintain healthy skin is regular exercise. In addition to the many other health benefits exercise provides, it helps to maintain healthy skin tone by causing toxins to be eliminated through the skin by sweating. This is especially true of aerobic exercises, which including bicycling, jogging, running, and rebounding (bouncing on a mini-trampoline).

One of the other ways in which exercise helps to enhance healthy skin has to do with the increased respiration rates occurs as a result of exercise and physical activity in general. Many people breathe inefficiently throughout the day, taking shallow breaths into the chest, and frequently pausing between inhalations and exhalation. This results in diminished levels of life-supporting oxygen being available to the body’s cells, as well as a buildup of carbon dioxide and other toxins and waste products that are eliminated during exhalation.

Shallow breathing also interferes with the function of your body’s lymphatic system, which acts as a filtration system, eliminating toxins and cellular wastes via the flow of lymph. Exercise stimulates respiration, causing deeper and fuller breathing. This, in turn, improves delivery of oxygen and increases the amount of toxins and waste by-products that are eliminated via exhalation, as well as through the lymphatic system. An end result of increased breathing rates is healthier skin.

A Beauty Secret Of The Stars

In Juice Alive, Dr. Bailey reports that many movie stars and other celebrities maintain healthy looking skin by using the following technique, which you too can easily add to your skin care regimen.

Step 1: Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil, adding aromatic herbs, such as mint or rosemary. Once the water comes to a full boil, turn off the burner and drape a large towel over your head, holding your face at a comfortable distance from the pot, exposing it to the rising steam for five minutes.

Step 2: Following steaming, immediately gently wash your face with a facial scrub. (A variety of organic facial scrubs are available at most local health food stores.) Then rinse and pat dry your face.

Step 3: Place ice cubes in a large bowl, then fill it with water. Immerse your face into the ice water, holding it underwater for as long as you can do so comfortably before having to come up for air. This will cause your facial skin to tighten and smoothen.

The above routine, if performed on a regular basis and used in conjunction with the rest of the self-care skin care and beauty tips shared above will leave your face and skin bright, clean, and healthy.
