Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. This week you can find my rebuttal to the president of the Corn Refiners Association after she claimed in my local paper that high fructose corn syrup is perfectly safe, despite the fact that a recent study found that it often contains mercury! You’ll also learn why olive leaf extract is good for your heart and be introduced to my friend Dr. Kerry Friesen, who shares with us why the quality of the water we drink is so important to brain health.

High Fructose Corn Syrup Alert

Recently, Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association, the organization with the most vested interest in continued sales of high fructose corn syrup, published a letter to the editor in my local hometown paper. Her piece, entitled “High Fructose Corn Syrup Isn’t All That Bad,” was an attempt to convince readers that high corn syrup is safe and perfectly acceptable as a food additive. To support her claim, she wrote:

“The American Medical Association in June 2008 helped put to rest misunderstandings about this sweetener and obesity, stating that ‘high fructose syrup does not appear to contribute to obesity more than other caloric sweeteners.’”

In concluding her letter, she added:

“In 1983, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration formally listed high fructose corn syrup as safe for use in food and reaffirmed that decision in 1996.

"Consumers can see the latest research and learn more about high fructose corn syrup at www.HFCSfacts.com and www.SweetSurprise.com.”

I found Erickson’s letter to be a blatant attempt to mislead consumers and wrote the following response:

I’m writing in response to Audrae Erickson’s outrageous assertions in her letter to the editor that “high fructose corn syrup isn’t all bad.” As president of the Corn Refiners Association, Erickson has a vested interest in doing all she can to protect the CRA’s marketplace, which is fine. But she does not have the right to glibly mislead the public with her assertions. For example, she states: “High fructose corn syrup, sugar and several fruit juices are all nutritionally the same.” This is patently untrue. Sugars that occur in nature are not at all the same as manmade high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), nor is the body able to metabolize synthetic substances such as HFCS in the same way that it is able to deal with natural substances.

Unfortunately, we cannot depend on the American Medical Association statements about fructose corn syrup, either. The AMA, after all, for decades resisted telling the American public that there was a link between diet and many types of cancer. Nor can we rely on the FDA, which for many years has shown a preference for supporting Big Industry over the health interests of we the people.

Proof of the FDA’s negligence with regard to HFCS came to light in a recently released study by the Institute for Agriculture and Trace Policy (IATP), which found not only that 30 percent of all HCFS contains mercury, a potentially fatal toxin. (Another study recently published puts the percentage closer to 50 percent). Equally alarming is the fact that the IATP press release that accompanied this study revealed that the FDA has known of this fact since 2005, but has done nothing “to
inform consumers, help change industry practice or conduct additional testing.”

Here is what Dr. David Wallinga, M.D., co-author of the IATP study says about this fact. “Given how much high fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the FDA to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply.”

The bottom line is that high fructose corn syrup is—pure and simple—crap. It doesn’t belong in your body in and of itself, and that such a large percentage of HFCS products also contain mercury, a very dangerous toxin, is all the more reason why you should avoid it.

In addition to most processed and packaged foods, HFCS is found in various foods and beverages, as well, such as many commercial juices, jellies, and y
ogurt, as well the usual food culprits such as candy and soda. Here are some of the food brands that were included in the IATP’s study: Hershey's, Quaker, Hunt's, Manwich, Smucker's, Kraft, Nutri-Grain, and Yoplait.

Needless to say, I DON’T recommend the websites that Erickson touts that I included above. Not unless you like reading propaganda.


Keep Your Heart Healthy With Olive Leaf Extract

Health experts have long praised olive oil as a healthy food for the heart. That’s because olive oil contains the highest amount of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats of the most commonly available vegetable oils. Monounsaturated fats can significantly reduce levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. In addition, olive oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, which also help to protect the heart and the body’s blood vessels by, respectively, protecting against chronic inflammation and minimizing free radical damage. As part of your daily health practice, be sure to include olive oil, both to cook and to use in salads.

For added benefit, you might also consider supplementing your diet with capsules of olive leaf extract. Derived from olive leaves, research has shown that olive leaf extract offers even greater health benefits than olive oil itself, especially when it comes to your heart.

Olive leaves contain a component known as oleuropein. This bitter tasting substance is removed from olives when during the process that produces olive oil. Italian researchers have found that oleuropein helps to increase blood flow to the heart and to reduce high blood pressure. Additionally, research shows that oleuropein found in olive leaf extract is actually more potent than in its natural form. Other health benefits of olive lead extract include protecting against free radical damage and preventing LDL cholesterol from becoming oxidized (oxidized LDL is a leading cause of atherosclerosis). It can even help to boost immune function and also acts as an anti-viral and anti-bacterial agent.

Olive leaf extract is now widely available in most health food stores, both in liquid and capsule form. Because of its potent, bitter taste, capsules may be more advisable. To help protect your heart, take one 500 mg capsule with one of your meals each day.

Where has all the water gone?

You can forget about oil.

Water is the world’s most precious commodity—and it’s getting harder to find.

In 1992 the United Nations designated March 22, World Water Day, to emphasize the ever increasing scarcity of safe water.

Good water is synonymous with good health—and worldwide for a billion people, it’s nearly impossible to find.

Each year 5 million people die of water related diseases, and every day women and children spend countless hours collecting polluted water from distant sources.

Here in America, our tap water is contaminated with 141 unregulated chemicals, some that are well known neurotoxins.

Water Is Life

While water is the most basic element on earth, it is also the least understood—just ask Dr. Emoto.

This much we know for certain:

70% of our overall body weight is water

80% of the composition of the brain is water

CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) the clear, colorless liquid of life we bathe our brains in daily is 99% water!

From a neuroanatomical perspective, having the brain and spinal cord suspended in watery medium makes good sense by buffering the brain from a sudden blow to the head.

As an added bonus, the net weight of the brain is reduced from 1400 to 50 grams, increasing buoyancy and reducing pressure at the base of the brain.

It’s the neurophysiology however that makes it much more interesting.

CSF Is What We Bathe Our Brains In Daily

Just as spring water flows spontaneously from a deep granite aquifer, a vascular structure found deep within the ventricles of the brain produces the 150 ml of CSF needed each day to both transport helpful hormones and remove potential toxins from the brain.

But what if the source water is contaminated?

What if the water we drink daily is unsafe and we spend a lifetime consuming it—what then?

While the blood-brain barrier provides a measure of protection, it is NOT impenetrable.  

Neurotoxins make their way to our brains daily, with little resistance.

When was the last time you enjoyed microwavable popcorn or had pizza delivered to your home?

Blood levels of perfluorinated chemicals (a known neurotoxicant) found in Teflon products, Stain-Resistant carpet, the inside lining of microwavable popcorn bags and yes even pizza box liners, are on the rise. There is also ample evidence identifying lead, methylmercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as neurotoxic agents.  The “Great” Lakes are not so great anymore.

In a recent French study conducted over 8 years, high aluminum levels in drinking water were associated with an elevated risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). This result was highly significant despite the low number of subjects exposed to such levels.  

In contrast, high silica levels found in the same source water, were associated with a lower risk of dementia and AD.

What To Do?

Only one percent of the water on earth is fresh water. We continue to contaminate that one percent at an alarming rate.

For your brain’s sake, find a reliable source of safe water.

Keep your exposure to other environmental toxins to a minimum.

Remember, in the world of neurotoxicology, exposure times a lifetime equals Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s or any one of numerous other neurodegenerative disorders.
