Cancer is a Preventable Disease of Our Western Life-Style by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD
Cancer rates have been rising steadily since the 1940s. But this is mostly true in Western life-style societies. By understanding how this happened, we can all learn to protect ourselves better.
A Cancer Epidemic Started in 1940
Cancer rates have been climbing steadily since 1940. This is not due simply to the increase use of screening tests or the aging of our population: cancer has been rising in children and adolescents at a rate of 1% per year in the past 25 years. And cancers that have no screening test (lymphomas, pancreatic and testicular cancers for example) have been increasing as fast or faster than those that do (breast, colon, prostate).
The most common cancers in the West are rare in some other countries. In certain regions of rural China in the 1980s, for example, WHO researchers using the same screening tests we use in the West were not able to find any cases of breast cancers. They were told by local physicians “it’s a disease of rich women! You’ll find it in Hong Kong, but not here.”
When Chinese women immigrate to the US, their risk of breast cancer becomes that of American women within one or two generations. The same is true for Japanese men and prostate cancer. Asians are not protected by their genes, but by their life-style.
A Watershed in 1940: Five Causes Of A Cancer Epidemic
Five major aspects of our life-style have changed since 1940 and contribute to the progression of cancer:
1. The massive increase of sugar consumption
We went from 12 lbs of refined sugar per person per year in the 1800s to 154 lbs per person per year in 2000.
Cancer cells feed primarily on sugar. To detect where a tumor may be present in the body, we use PET scans that simply measure where radioactive sugar accumulates.
2. The change in the way we feed animals that feed us
Animals used to feed on grass and seeds rich in omega-3 fatty acids that slow the growth of cancer. Hence, meat, milk, cheese, butter, and eggs were all rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Now that animals are fed in feedlots with corn and soy, omega-3s have practically disappeared from our common foods. Eggs my grandmother used to feed me on the farm I was raised on were a genuine “health food”, filled with the omega-3 DHA necessary for the growth of a child’s brain. Today’s supermarket eggs have practically no DHA and it has been replaced with the pro-inflammatory omega-6 arachidonic acid (AA).
A diet rich in omega-6 fatty acids is associated with a markedly increased risk of breast cancer. As omega-6s stimulate inflammation in the body, they are likely to feed the growth of many other types of cancer too.
Trans-fats, introduced widely in the 1960’s, are now present in almost all industrial foods (pizza, cookies, French fries etc.). They are thought to increase the risk of breast cancer by a factor of 2. A Dutch government report of 2007 estimates that that the number of deaths due to trans-fats in that country exceeds that due to motor vehicle accidents.
3. The introduction of chemicals in all aspects of life
DDT was invented just before WWII. Many common herbicides and pesticides mimic the effects of estrogen hormones in the body. They can stimulate the growth of an existing tumor. In 2005 the CDC found 149 toxic chemicals in the blood and urine of American of all ages that were tested. In 2003 the University of Seattle tested pre-schoolers who eat conventional (non-organic) foods. The level of pesticide residue in their urine was high. For some of them, it exceeded by a factor of 4 the limit recommended by the Environment Protection Agency. Children eating organic diets (70% organic or better) had practically none.
4. The massive reduction in our physical activity
Do you know anyone whose grand-parents did not walk to school? How many children do you know today who walk more than 10 minutes to go to school? Something powerful has happened to our relation to physical activity. We are the most sedentary humans that ever existed.
The risk of a relapse from breast cancer is 50% less in women who walk 30 minutes six times a week. Physical activity is a highly effective protector from cancer that we have eliminated from our lives.
5. The disorganization of our social support networks
We Americans now move on average every 5 years. This means that we change neighbors, often friends, and get further and further away from our aunts and uncles, our parents, and our siblings.
In times of major stress, the most effective protection from adverse psychological and physical effects on our body comes from the strength of our intimate relationships. How strong are they today when we no longer live near each other? Twenty-five percent of us say that we have no one in whom we can confide.
One Australian study found that women with a major stressor in their life and no intimate support had 9.5 times more chances of developing breast cancer.
The encouraging part in this sad picture of an epidemic is that each one of us can start to reverse these societal changes in our own life. We can decide to nourish balance, to stimulate health, in us and around us. We can opt for a new way of life. And in doing so, we simultaneously help prevent cancer if we are cancer free, and strengthen our bodies if we already have it.

Water, Histamine, and Pain by Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, MD
Drug companies manufacture a class of chemicals that are strong antihistamines. Histamine is a brain chemical whose action the drug industry is determined to block when there is pain. Most strong pain medications are antihistamines. There are many kinds produced by different companies. One variety is called Tagamet. It is now a non-prescription drug that you can buy off the shelf.
I set out to research why histamine is the target when pain medications are used.
I discovered that histamine is a vital chemical messenger in the brain. Histamine has a most important function not written about in medical textbooks. It is in charge of water intake and drought management in the body. It is less active when the body is fully hydrated, and becomes increasingly active when the body becomes dehydrated. This was the connection I was looking for. In short, histamine produces pain when an area in the body is suffering from drought!
I had to search through numerous scientific journals to collect this information. It took several months to put this information together. I made several copies of a thick scientific volume, and had each volume bound -- in April 1985, 13 years ago! A copy was sent to each of the professors who were present at the meeting in Professor Spiro’s office.
I presented at various conferences the discovery that the human body produces pain and develops various diseases when it is suffering from drought. One such conference was the 3rd Interscience World Conference on Inflammation, held in Monte Carlo in 1989.
Deception and Human Suffering!
Here is the story that should dispel any myths about drug companies being on the side of consumers! In the autumn of 1988 I was invited to speak at the Gastroenterology Society meeting held at the Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia -- a hospital and a country that lack nothing money can buy. I was introduced to the local representative of a major drug company that manufactures one of these special pain medications. He did not know me or the topic of my presentation.
He was curious. Here I was in Saudi Arabia, from America, addressing a medical gathering.
He asked me, "Do you use our product?" I answered, "No, I do not."
He asked, "Are you using the product of our competitor?" I said, "No, I do not use the product of your competitor either."
With much surprise he asked, "Then, what do you use to treat your patients?" I told him, "I use water."
In amazement, he said, "What, water alone?"
"Yes," I said, "Water alone."
Then I asked him the two questions that had bothered me for some time.
"As a researcher into the effect of histamine functions on the body physiology, your company must be aware of the primary role of histamine in water regulation and drought management of the body. Firstly, why do you insist that its actions should be blocked? And, secondly, why do you not explain this water-regulatory role of histamine in the body to the clinicians who are being asked to block its action by the use of your product?"
What do you think was his answer?
In an irritated tone of voice, he replied, "We are not here to educate the doctors. They should discover that for themselves! We are a manufacturing company interested in selling a product!" Exactly what I expected!
Fortunately, I am now able to reveal what drug companies have been for years concealing from the doctors and their patients. This new knowledge will make the practice of medicine much simpler -- and friendlier to you, your health, and your financial resources. What is more, medical jargon will no longer get in your way of understanding your own body and its ways of talking to you.
And, of course, the profession of medicine will once again become an honorable calling and not just a way to get rich quickly.

Self-Care Tips for Improving Your Metabolism and Shedding Excess Pounds
One of the keys to having more energy and preventing or shedding excess weight gain is a healthy metabolism. Simply put, your metabolism to how much energy you use up each day, as measured by how many calories you burn. The more efficient your metabolism is, the more efficiently you will burn up calories.
During periods of increased activity, your metabolism will operate at a higher level and burn more calories. But even when you are resting, even sleeping, your metabolism is working and burning calories. It just isn’t doing so at the same rate as when your metabolism is high, due to physical activity.
One of the differences between people with healthy energy levels who are able to maintain their ideal weight, and people who are less energetic and who struggle to not gain excess weight is that people in the former category efficiently burn calories—and more of them—even when they are doing nothing. Even at rest, their metabolisms are performing optimally, helping to keep them fit, trim, and full of energy.
If you need to lose weight and/or increase your energy levels, you need to boost your resting metabolic rate (the rate at which your metabolism performs when you are at rest). One of the best ways of doing so is to increase your body’s overall lean muscle mass. Lean muscle tissue requires more energy than fat body tissue. As a result, by increasing your overall muscle mass, you will also be turning your metabolic rate up a notch or two. The end result will be a more efficient resting metabolic rate that burns calories more efficiently and increases energy levels.
If you need to increase your body’s overall muscle mass, consider a regular program of weight training and strength conditioning. In the beginning, if you can, seek instruction from a professional fitness trainer and also consult with your physician to ensure that you are fit enough to engage in the exercises your instructor will suggest for you. Performing such exercises as little as twice a week for at least 30-45 minutes per session can make a dramatic difference in your health, by boosting your metabolism and helping you to more efficiently burn calories throughout the day. For even better results, consider adding some aerobic exercises to your work out routine, and be sure to eat healthily and in accordance with your specific metabolic type.

D-Ribose: The Heart And Energy Booster
Chances are you haven’t heard of it. Most people haven’t, including many doctors.
I’m talking about an important nutrient known as D-Ribose. And those in the know, including many of the world’s top athletes, make sure to include it as part of their daily nutritional supplement regime because of the wealth of benefits it provides.
Although D-Ribose remains fairly unknown, it is found in all living cells, including the more than 70 trillion cells that make up your body. One of its most essential roles is serving as one of components of DNA and RNA, which together act as the building blocks for your body and all of its cells, tissues, organs, etc. Without enough D-Ribose, neither DNA or RNA can function properly.
An equally important function performed by D-Ribose is the initiation of your body’s production of a compound known as adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. Simply put, ATP acts as fuel factories inside each of your body’s cells, and is therefore the major source of energy that your body needs to perform all of its functions. Without adequate amounts of D-Ribose, adequate amounts of ATP cannot be manufactured. And without enough ATP, your body won’t all the energy it requires to meet its many needs.
It’s primarily for this reason that world-class athletes and a growing number of other health-conscious people take D-Ribose as a nutritional supplement. By doing so, they are able to quickly and safely restore and then maintain their bodies’ energy levels. D-Ribose supplements help to ensure that human cells have the fuel they need to efficiently produce ATP. This, in turn, enables the body to have lasting energy.
Because of its ability to help your body produce ATP more easily and efficiently, D-Ribose is also useful during times of illness and stress. That’s because both stress and illness sap your body’s energy levels, making it more difficult for you to recover. In fact, research shows that supplementing with D-Ribose can increase energy production of the heart and other muscles by as much as 430 percent. And that’s not the only cardiovascular benefit D-Ribose provides. Additional research shows that D-Ribose is extremely effective in preventing and reversing a heart condition known as ischemia. Ischemia is characterized by reduced blood flow to and from the heart, which in turn causes a reduced flow of oxygen to your body’s cells, tissues, and organs. Without enough oxygen, the cells cannot properly make use of ATP and other energy-producing fuels. As a result, increased pressure is put on the heart muscle itself, further reducing the amount of energy available to the rest of your body. That explains why ischemia patients are so often tired after performing even the simplest of physical activities.
Research shows that ischemia can reduce ATP levels by as much 50 percent or more. Moreover, even after ischemia is stabilized ATP levels typically do not return to normal until another week to ten days. In fact, lack of energy is a major symptom for most patients suffering from any type of heart disease. And once gain, that’s where D-Ribose can come to the rescue.
Scientists have found that D-Ribose supplements can enable weakened hearts to recover up to 85 percent of their normal ATP levels in as little as 24 hours. Other studies have shown that D-Ribose can restore ATP levels and normal heart function within 48 hours after a heart attack, whereas it takes an average of four weeks for heart function and ATP levels to return to normal without D-Ribose.
It is for these reasons that D-Ribose supplementation is now being recommended by growing numbers of health practitioners seeking to help their patients improve their energy levels. Note: As with all other nutritional supplements, however, be sure to discuss D-Ribose with your doctor before you start to use it so that he or she can rule other any underlying problems that may be contributing to your fatigue.
