Dr. Andrew Weil: Hazardous To Your Health?
Recommendations: A Book Review by Dr. C. Norman Shealy

New This Issue

Welcome to another issue of The Health Plus Letter. This week I’m taking Dr. Andrew Weil to task for promoting false information about one of the most brilliant cancer researchers in the world, Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski. Weil is well-known as an expert in the field of alternative and integrative medicine, but is reputation isn’t always justly deserved, as I explain below.

Also in this issue, you will learn of the latest “you can’t make this up” move by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that I feel certain is ill-advised (I’m being polite). You’ll find another review of Byron Richard’s excellent book, Fight for Your Health, which I recommended to you a few weeks ago, this time by noted alternative medicine expert Dr. C. Norman Shealy (who, unlike Weil, most definitely does know what he’s talking about). I have a great deal of respect for both Dr. Shealy and Byron Richards, and am including Norm’s review because of how succinctly and powerfully it reveals the hidden history of modern medicine. To find out more of this sordid tale (your life may depend upon it), I highly recommend that you read Fight for Your Health, which is available at
www.truthinwellness.com.

As always, please continue to send me your comments and suggestions. And please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter by passing it along to your friends and inviting them to subscribe.

Quote Of The Day

“When you smile, Life takes care of you. When you frown, you’re on your own.”

Fast Fact

In 1991, investigators for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) conducted an on-site inspection of Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski’s research facility. Based on their findings, the NCI issued an official statement approving Burzynski’s documentation of seven of eight patients who recovered from advanced, inoperable brain tumors as a result of being administered Dr. Burzynski’s antineoplaston therapy. The statement said: “The National Cancer Institute reviewed 7 cases of primary brain tumors that were treated by Dr. Burzynski with antineoplastons A10 and AS2-1 and concluded that antitumors responses occurred.”

Dr. Andrew Weil: Hazardous To Your Health?

Dr. Andrew Weil is one of the most well-known figures in the field of alternative and integrative medicine, and has written a number of bestselling books on the subject. As a result, he is today considered to be one of the foremost experts in the field, a reputation he does nothing to eschew. This is unfortunate, because the fact of the matter is that Weil’s expertise is not at all as encompassing as many people believe. While it is certainly true that he has done much to advance the public’s awareness of alternative healing methods and to get physicians in both the alternative and conventional medical fields to consider joining together to create a new era of integrative medicine, it is also true that he doesn’t always know what he is talking about.

For example, he is on record stating that fluoridated water does not pose any health risks and is actually a good health measure, despite reams of evidence that links fluoride to cancer. Including this recent finding that “[B]oys who drink water with levels of fluoride considered safe by federal guidelines are five times more likely to have a rare bone cancer than boys who drink unfluoridated water according to a study by Harvard Univ/ersity scientists published in a peer-reviewed journal.” (See
www.ewg.org/issues/fluoride/20060405/index.php.) Not to mention the fact that prominent scientists who once backed fluoridation, such as Dr. Hardy Limeback, B.Sc., Ph.D in Biochemistry, D.D.S., head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry for the Univ/ersity of Toronto, and president of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, are n/o/w reversing themselves and going on record to say that it is unsafe, especially for children. (See www.drfarid.com/floride.html.)

I can’t claim to follow all of Weil’s medical pronouncements, but I expect that if I did, I would be aware of other fallacious claims made by him. But what really has me incensed at the moment is his recent disparaging of Dr. Stanilaw Burzynski, one of the most brilliant cancer researchers in the world. Earlier this week, while using Google to update myself on Dr. Burzynski’s work, I came upon the following statement by Weil posted on his website (
www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/QAA400003) under the outrageous headline: Antineoplastons: A Bogus Cancer Treatment? Responding to a question from (presumably) one of his readers, who asked, “What can you tell me about Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski and his antineoplaston treatment for cancer? Does it really work?” Weil replied (on July 28, 2006):

<<Stanislaw Burzynski, M.D., is a Polish-trained physician who immigrated to the United States. He was performing research at Baylor College of Medicine in the 1970s when he isolated natural compounds from urine which he called antineoplastons. He described them as a natural fo.rm of cancer protection and began producing synthetic versions in his laboratory. In 1977, Dr. Burzynski opened a clinic in Houston, Texas, and ever since has been treating cancer patients there with his antineoplaston therapy.

Over the years, Dr. Burzynski claims to have treated more than 8,000 patients, but his success rates are unknown. His website states only that he has helped "many" people. If antineoplaston therapy works, we should have scientific studies showing what percentage of patients treated have survived and for how long, as well as evidence showing how Dr. Burzynski's method stacks up against conventional cancer treatment. The only study I know that documents how Dr. Burzynski's patients have fared was done in Canada in 1985. It found that of 36 patients treated, 32 died without showing signs of improvements. One patient died after slight improvement, another died after being stable for a year and, at the time of the study, the other two had widespread cancer.

The cost of antineoplaston therapy at Dr.
Burzynski's clinic reportedly ranges from $30,000 to $60,000 per year. After initial treatment there, patients may be able to continue therapy at home with follow up clinic visits every two months.

While antineoplastons are said to be nontoxic, reported side effects can be unpleasant and include stomach gas, slight rashes, chills, fever, changes in blood pressure and unpleasant body odor during treatment.

Until we have credible scientific evidence showing what antineoplastons are, how they act in the body, and what realistic expectations of treatment with them might be, I see no reason for any cancer patient to take this route. (Emphasis added.)

Andrew Weil, M.D.>>

This response by Weil is wholly irresponsible and shows his ignorance of Burzynski’s work. First of all, by stating that he only knows of one study,” Weil illustrates that he hasn’t made any effort to find out more about the effectiveness of antineoplaston therapy. Moreover, he doesn’t even cite references for the study he mentions, meaning we are unable to read the actual study itself to determine not only what it states, but whether it was conducted properly and what the medical status of the study group was prior to beginning antineoplaston therapy. Knowing how the medical establishment worldwide can skew studies beforehand, it wouldn’t surprise me to know that all of the patients in the group had already tried and failed conventional cancer therapies. Moreover, how do we know that Dr. Burzynski’s treatment protocols were properly followed? This is an important point, for, as Thomas D. Elias states in his book, The Burzynski Breakthrough (which I highly recommend and which Weil doubtless has not read), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in conducting a clinical trial of antineoplaston therapy, may have diluted the suggested dose, thereby diminishing the chances of a positive outcome. (One of the patients in this study, told the therapy was having no effect and that she was going to die, then contacted Dr. Burzynski. When told of her plight, he agreed to treat her without cost and “Her tumor growth slowed and eventually stopped.” True, months later, the tumors reappeared, but as her husband asks, why, if she was in fact getting full-strength antineoplastons at NIH and didn’t respond there, did she respond later at the Burzynski Institute. Both husband and wi.fe suspect that the NIH intentionally wanted the clinical trial to fail.)

As I mentioned in the Fast Fact above, the National Cancer Institute is on record stating that antineoplaston therapy produced a positive outcome in seven of eight cancer patients with advanced, inoperable brain tumors. In addition, had Weil bothered to search PubMed, the online medical research database jointly provided by the NIH and the National Library of Medicine, he would have found more than 50 entries on antineoplaston therapy, most of which document far better outcomes than the Canadian study he refers to, yet does not cite. (see
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search&DB=pubmed).

Weil then includes the cost of antineoplaston therapy, doing so in a way that makes it sound as if it is prohibitively expensive. While the cost does indeed seem high, compare it to the cost of conventional cancer treatments in the US, which n/o/w includes drugs that cost as much as $5000 or more a month, on top of all of the additional costs involved in conventional cancer care. (As an example, my sister’s medical costs were over $1,000,000, most of it incurred in the two years after her cancer metastasized, ultimately killing her. This is far from abnormal. As anyone knows who has investigated Cancer, Inc, my name for the cancer establishment, treating cancer is truly a Big Business.) Moreover, what Weil leaves unsaid is the fact that Dr. Burzynski can quickly tell whether or not his treatment protocols will work for cancer patients, since improvements, if they occur, typically do so within the first month of treatment. In addition—and to me, this explains why he has been repeatedly attacked by the FDA and other medical agencies, including being brought to trial more than once on charges that were each time rejected by juries despite the fact that Burzysnki’s lawyers were prevented from introducing evidence proving the effectiveness of antineoplaston therapy—as Dr. Burzynski told me himself when I first met him in 1994 and toured his research facility, the cost of treatment is currently high because he is forced to manufacture his own supply of antineoplaston therapy. But, if he were able to have his therapy approved by the FDA as a viable cancer treatment—a goal he continues to pursue—the eventual cost would be far less expensive since the burden of production would no longer be his alone.

Weil then states that we currently lack “credible scientific evidence showing what antineoplastons are, how they act in the body, and what realistic expectations of treatment with them might be.” This statement is patently false. What antineoplastons and what their method of action is in the body has long been available in the scientific research, and based on the published studies and articles on Bursynski’s work, it is certainly possible to have “realistic expectations” of what type of results can be expected from them.

Had Weil truly been interested in researching antineoplaston therapy, he could have done what I did years ago—visited the Burzynski Research Institute himself and interviewed the many patients who have successfully recovered from cancer as a direct result of antineoplaston therapy. One of these is my friend Neal Dublinsky, who first informed me of the promise antineoplaston therapy holds. His remarkable recovery is included in the cancer chapter I wrote for Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide. Summarizing his case, Neal, at the age of 24, was diagnosed with advanced (Stage IV) non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which had spread throughout his entire abdomen and was pressing into his lungs. After four months of chemotherapy, followed by radiation, therapy, and finally a transplant of his own bone marrow, Neal was told he had only a short time to live and should make his peace with God. Thankfully, Neal refused this diagnosis and began researching alternative cancer treatments and contacting alternative cancer organizations. This led him to Dr. Burzynski. Within weeks, he began to experience improvements in his health and today, 15 years later, he remains cancer-free and is in an excellent overall state of health. Many other similar success stories can be found at the Burzynski Patient Group website (
http://burzynskipatientgroup.org/stories.html) which is maintained and operated by grateful patients completely independent of Dr. Burzynski.

All of the information I’m sharing above is readily available. So why is it that Weil so ignorantly disparages Dr. Burzynski with his comments? Is ignorance the sole reason? Or is his doing so an attempt to curry favor with the medical establishment by not seeming too controversial? (After all, he does have his bestselling author and health expert persona to maintain.) Whatever the reason, Weil owes Dr. Burzysnki an apology. At the same time, his willingness to comment about subjects on which he is ignorant is a sad yet all too common trait of a variety of health experts once they achieve a certain level of fame and financial reward. So when it comes to future pronouncements by Weil, I recommend that you don’t accept them at face value. Instead, do your own research and rely on websites and other sources that are actually devoted to providing health information, not the promotion of personalities.

FIGHT FOR YOUR HEALTH - EXPOSING THE FDA'S BETRAYAL OF AMERICA - By Byron J. Richards—A review by C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.

Fight for Your Life and Freedom might be the real story. As the author states in the introduction ''-the FDA spent the last hundred years boosting the pro/fits of the drug companies and eliminating competition to those companies-''. This story begins with the sordid tale of none other than John D. Rockefeller, the original Robber Baron, sometimes called ''the most ruthless American.'' Rockefeller profited in the Civil War by selling unstamped liquor to federal troops at a high pro/fit. This provided him the foundation to launch control of the petroleum industry as Standard Oil! Rockefeller was behind every aspect of the immoral, irreligious, humanist movement, including eugenics and the Illuminati - with the goal of establishing a ''new world order'' which wipes out governments and religions, guided by the Light of Lucifer-Satan of Greek mythology! Rockefeller funded the Humanist Manifesto and of course the Rockefeller Foundation which funded Abraham Flexner, who destroyed almost all opposition to allopathic (drugs and surgery) medicine. It is also no accident that Bush, Kerry. Edwards and many government leaders of both parties are members of Skull and Bones, a branch of the Illuminati, one founded with opium mo.ney!

Bayer, the original German company that brought us aspirin, copied the Rockefeller approach to domination and blended with IG Farben to become the dominant pharmaceutical giants early in the 20th century. And this company became the father of artificial chemical fertilizers-as well as nitrate explosives!! It was a major conspirator in the success of Adolph Hitler. And IG Farben's semi-incestuous; behind the scenes agreement with Standard Oil helped Hitler pursue his attempt to dominate the world. Hitler failed while the PetroChemical (read Petroleum and Pharmaceutical) has n/o/w ascended! And it was Rockefeller who engineered the survival of Bayer after the war.

Bayer synthesized heroin and methadone; and many of the chemicals used in pharmaceutical narcotics come from the same chemicals used to manufacture explosives. No wonder the PharmacoMafia and Illuminati want to suppress natural sources of narcotics!!

Today, the PharmacoMafia, PetroChemical, War Industry, Multinational Food (call them the Military Industrial Complex) giants are by far the dominant economic force in the world, supported fully by Congress and Presidents of both parties. David Rockefeller, son of Nelson, has spent his life pushing globalization, including setting up the U.N. to assist the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) in its world control. I love the section ''William Jefferson Clinton - The Next Useful Idiot.'' One of Clinton's greatest achievements, supported by Newt Gingrich, was to extend pharmaceutical patent protection to avoid generic competition! The FDA is a small but critical part of the attempt by the MIC to regulate out of existence health options in favor of Disease options-pharmaceutical instead of natural approaches.

David Troy, chief Council for the FDA under George W. Bush, according to Congressman Maurice Hincher (D-NY), was paid $415,000 by Pfizer over the 3 years prior to his appointment to the FDA! Under Clinton, Big Pharma promised the FDA $200 Million-provided the FDA spent much of it on new drug approvals! The PharmacoMafia, AKA PharmacoFascists (my titles) are clearly the single greatest measurable cause of death and disability. Total pharmaceutical revenues are n/o/w over $100 Trillion each year. Illicit drugs add over half that figure, and may well be supported by the same industry (although I do not have proof of that).

The MIC has overseen the chemical pollution of American and the planet, with PCB's, Perchlorates, pesticides, herbicides, transfats, aspartame and many others, all for pro/fit, none for health, and with the consent and support of the FDA. Add this to the many truly dangerous drugs, such as statins, bisphosphonates, and chemotherapeutics (an oxymoron) in general.

Meanwhile with the oversight of the Germans-home of Bayer, we have Codex, which pushes drugs and is attempting to prevent natural supplements! The FDA loves Codex which would help the FDA with its longstanding attempt to suppress all natural supplements. In order to expedite this take over, the PharmacoMafia is purchasing many nutritional companies, while suppressing the smaller ones!

Read this fine book and take action! The real war is against the terrorist Military Industrial Complex!
