Health Tips From the Latest ACAM Convention

The Benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oils: A good part of my time at the conference was spent listening to various doctors speak about the healing benefits of omega-3 fish oils. In addition to the information Dr. Garry Gordon shared with me, I also heard Dr. Joseph Maroon, neurosurgeon and physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers share his accounts of how using omega-3 fish oils has allowed him to indefinitely postpone up to 30 percent of back surgeries that he admitted he would have definitely performed three years ago, before he became familiar with nutritional approaches for healing. (By his own admission, three years ago, Dr. Maroon knew nothing about this subject.) As a result, he is n/o/w known in the greater Pittsburgh area as the neurosurgeon to go to if you don’t wish to have surgery.

In a workshop he conducted following his lecture on the subject, Dr. Maroon and other physicians shared the experiences they have had since they began recommending omega-3 fish oils to their patients. Dr. Maroon stated that the approximately 30 percent of his patients who n/o/w no longer require surgery due to omega-3 supplementation were all shown my MRI, X-ray, and other diagnostic tests to have seriously advanced cases of joint disease and back pain. But after taking omega-3capsules for a few weeks to a few months, their need for surgery was gone.

During the workshop, Dietrich Wittel, MD, PhD, who overseas three holistic health clinics in British Columbia, shared that he has achieved a 100 percent success rate with patients suffering from joint pain and arthritis simply through the use of omega-3 fish oil capsules. Asked to be more specific about the dosages he recommends, Dr. Wittel replied that he has patients take 20 capsules per day (dived into two or three doses) for five days, and then to follow a maintenance dose of five capsules a day. In his experience, within a week or two of doing so, his patients’ pain symptoms disappear. He also stated that all of his fibromyalgia patients experience significant relief following this same protocol, although usually it takes two to three months before the benefits are achieved.

As long-term readers of The Health Plus Letter know, a few years ago, following the death of my sister, I began to experience shoulder pain in my right shoulder that eventually resulted in my inability to fully extend my right arm. Once I fully emotionally healed, my arm and shoulder healed as well and I regained my full range of motion. At certain times, however (usually after a number of days putting in long hours writing), I do experience minor pains in my shoulder that tend to linger. Such was the case during the time I heard Dr. Wittel’s statements, so I immediately upped my dose of omega-3 to the amount he recommended. Literally within hours, my pain completely vanished.

If you decide to use omega-3 fish oils, be sure to use a brand that purifies the fish oil of various impurities, including mercury and other heavy metals. I prefer Beyond Omega-3, developed by Dr. Gordon (see the link to Garry’s products at 1HealthyWorld.com). Other good brands are Nordic Naturals and Nowfood’s Omega-3.

Vitamin C-The Ultimate Nutrient: Another fascinating lecture I attended was the presentation by Dr. Thomas Levy, MD, JD, on the many benefits of vitamin C. Dr. Levy is both a cardiologist and a lawyer, and the author of a book I highly recommend, Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, & Toxins: Curing the Incurable. The research he has conducted about the many healing benefits of vitamin C is quite extensive, and his talk reflected that. Of most interest to me was what Dr. Levy shared about the late Frederick Klenner, MD, a North Carolina physician who routinely used high doses (usually administered intravenously) of vitamin C to cure a host of supposedly incurable conditions, including polio, as well as many other conditions.

Having had the good fortune to have interviewed the late Dr. Linus Pauling in 1992, I’ve supplemented with vitamin C ever since. Even, so, Dr. Levy’s lecture opened my eyes to the full scope of vitamin C’s many health benefits. As a result, I have increased my daily dosage and already am experiencing greater levels of energy and overall well-being. Dr. Levy’s book provides extensive documentation for vitamin C’s effectiveness for both preventing and treating a wide range of conditions caused by bacterial and viral infections, environmental toxins, and other conditions, including leprosy, malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS. At a time when fearmongers in the government and media are hyping flu outbreaks and apocalyptic pandemics, it’s good to know that vitamin C provides an extremely safe, effective, and inexpensive solution to so many of our health problems. To fully benefit from it, however, you may need to consume it in much higher dosages than even many holistic physicians recommend, according to Dr. Levy.

Dr. Levy recommends using a powdered, non-calcium vitamin C formula, such as sodium ascorbate. Increase your dosage until you experience loose stools (this is known as bowel tolerance). Before this occurs, you may also temporarily experience gas, which by itself is not an indication that bowel tolerance has been reached. Once you do experience bowel tolerance, Dr. Levy recommends reducing your intake until symptoms subside. This is the dose to stay on as an effective preventive measure against most viral and bacterial infection. Note: As you become sued to taking vitamin C in high doses, beware that you don’t suddenly stop doing so, as this can cause a rebound effect, during which time you can actually become more susceptible to disease agents.

The Health Risks Posed by Root Canals: During his talk, Dr. Levy shared information about the dangers of root canals, based on his many years of collaboration with Dr. Hal Huggins, a pioneering holistic dentist. According to Dr. Levy, root canals can significantly increase the risk of bacterial infections occurring inside the gum and jaw due to the fact that, once a root canal is performed, there is no way for the immune system to reach and support the teeth and gum area. Over time, the buildup of bacteria can create serious health problems, including contributing to heart disease.

A Simple and Effective Tip for Treating Gum Disease: Finally, Dr. Levy shared this tip for preventing and reversing gum (periodontal) disease. Purchase a water pik and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide (available at any drug store). In place of water, place hydrogen peroxide in the water pik and apply to your gums twice a day. Dr. Levy says this will restore gum health in as little as two weeks.

The Way of the White Clouds by Lama Anagarika Govinda.
When this book was written (1950), Lama Anagarika Govinda traveled in Tibet on the brink of the Chinese invasion: in this moment of repose, totally isolated from the Western world, Govinda found in Tibetan Buddhism an alternative to the destructive materialism of both communism and capitalism. His luminous and candid account in The Way Of The White Clouds is a spectacular and gloriously poetic story of exploration and discovery, and a sensitive interpretation of Tibetan traditions.  I found his account to be fascinating.
