Quote Of The Day
“Much of what we accept to be true is in actuality based on unproven assumptions.”
Fast Fact
70% of all illness in the United States is of a chronic, long-term nature. Such illnesses typically are not resolved by conventional medical care.

Hypnosis Found To Be Effective In Relieving Cancer Pain
New research has found that hypnosis can be effective in relieving pain and other side effects related to cancer and cancer treatment, and also help improve the quality of life of cancer patients. According to Dr. Christina Liossi, speaking before the British Association for the Advancement of Science, medical evidence n/o/w exists that hypnosis helps to relieve the depression, nausea, vomiting, and pain suffered by cancer patients, and may be able to prolong overall survival rates. Other researchers, commenting on the findings, stated that hypnosis is a “marvelous therapeutic tool” that is largely being ignored by the medical community.
For more on this story, see http://snipurl.com/91I6
[Comment: Hypnosis is one of the most misunderstood therapies of which I am aware, largely due to the belief that subjects who are hypnotized have something “done to them” by the hypnotherapist to effect the experience that then results. In actuality, all any hypnotherapist worth his or her salt does is help facilitate a shift into a relaxed, expanded state of awareness that all of us access every day (although we often ignore it as it occurs). One of the reasons I was attracted to learn hypnotherapy was because of how easily it can be used as a self-care protocol and for self-exploration. I don’t spend too much time experimenting with it n/o/w, but during the period when I was practicing (1992), I gained great benefit from self-hypnosis and also witnessed others dramatically improve their lives after only two or three sessions with me. (The cre/dit belongs to them, not me.)
As for the research above, while both useful and potentially important, I don’t feel that it goes far enough. One day, I would hope that researchers will study how well hypnosis and other, similar types of therapies, can be used to achieve complete healing by themselves alone.]

Learning To Heal (Part 3)
As I’ve discussed in the past two weeks (see Vol.2, Nos. 28 and 29 of The Health Plus Letter, both of which are archived at http://www.1healthyworld.com/ezine), illness, especially of a chronic nature, can often be symbolic of something else within our lives that we have previously been unwilling or unable to address. This can be true even of serious conditions such as cancer. In fact, I have met dozens of long-term cancer survivors who have told me, “Cancer was the best thing that ever happened to me.” The reason they say this is because, for them, cancer was a wake up call that there were issues in their lives that needed to be addressed and healed. Each of the people I’m referring to recognized their illness as an impetus for doing just that. In the process, they invariably discovered that they had neglected themselves in some way, and made a point of doing something about it. For some, this involved leaving careers that were secure but unfulfilling to embark upon the livelihood they’d previously lacked the courage to embrace. For others, it meant deepening their relationships with themselves and their loved ones and/or leaving relationships that were no longer appropriate in order to open themselves up to ones that were. In every instance, these people not only resolved their cancer, they also recreated their lives in order to better fulfill themselves. Had they not done so, they’ve told me, they don’t believe they would be alive today.
Such people are hardly unique. There are many former cancer patients who were catalyzed by their illness to positively change their lives, nor are cancer patients the only ones to do so. Given that fact, it makes sense to consider whether there might be hidden “messages” within our less serious illnesses and minor health complaints, so that we can deal with whatever unresolved issues they pertain to before our illnesses transform into something more serious. But how do we go about determining what, if any, “message” is waiting for us?
There are various ways to do this, including considering the quest/ions listed at the end of Part 2 of this essay last issue. Another effective technique involves having a dialogue with your illness. This technique has a number of variations to it, and has been shared with patients by leaders in the fields of mind/body medicine and guided imagery such as pioneering healers O. Carl Simonton and Martin L. Rossman (do a web search on their names to find out more) for many years. It’s also something my clients achieved great results with during the time I practiced as a hypnotherapist. Nor is it something you need the assistance of another in order to perform. Simply get pen and paper and, in a relaxed, reflective state, f/r/e/e of outside disturbance, ask yourself the following question: “If my illness/ailment could speak, what would it want to tell me?”
Without editing yourself, immediately write down the first impression that comes to you in your mind as an answer. You may be surprised by how detailed a response you find within yourself, or you may initially only catch a glimpse of the answer you are seeking. If the latter, don’t get discouraged. Keep asking yourself quest/ions related to this exercise and writing down the responses that arise within you. To further abet the process, consider writing down your answers using your non-dominant hand (the hand you normally do not write with – for more on this, see this week’s Recommendations section below).
The biggest obstacle to achieving success with this method is our so-called, adult, rational mind, which may interpret the exercise as childish, ridiculous, etc. If that is your reaction to what I’m suggesting, do the exercise anyway and see what happens. It’s OK to be skeptical, but I find no wisdom in being a cynic. (To me, the difference between a skeptic and a cynic is that the skeptic is willing to test his or her viewpoint, while the cynic holds fast to pre-formed conclusions without taking the time to be proven wrong.)
Once you begin to get the answers/messages of the exercise, your big/ger task awaits you – taking action to follow through on what you discovered. For some people, this can be the biggest obstacle to healing – the fear of or resistance to change (the resistance wouldn’t be there if fear hadn’t gotten there first). Next week, I’ll discuss how we can move past such fears, no matter how frightening they may at first appear to be.

Self-Care Tips for Managing and Preventing Inflammation
Infection is characterized by redness, swelling, pain, and heat in localized areas of the body, due to tissue injury, secondary to disease process, or trauma from physical, infectious, or chemical insult.
Symptoms: Any part of the body can be affected, internal or external.
Special Notes: Elevate and, if necessary, splint the affected area. Apply heat and or ice alternating, or her/bal poultices, take necessary antibiotics if due to a bacterial infection, consume a whole foods diet with emphasis on raw foods, plenty of fresh juices, and filtered water, and rest, if the inflammation is severe.
According to Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., inflammation is a natural and potentially beneficial response of the body to factors that are irritating or damaging it. The use of anti-inflammatory drugs against arthritis has shown that, over a period of years, people using these medications have worse damage to their joints than people not receiving any treatment. This is because, unpleasant as it may be, the inflammation of the joints in arthritis actually precedes a degree of normalization of the damaged surface.
When inflammation is excessive or chronic, it is useful to modify it, but always by methods that cause no further problems and always in the knowledge that the inflammation can be a useful and natural response to whatever is causing damage to the body.
Self-Care
Diet: Whole foods diet or 75% raw foods diet. If there is chronic inflammation, you may consider a simple mono-diet for two to four days, eating fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains only, with lots of filtered water. Cut down or avoid sugar, white flour, junk foods, colas. Increase dietary garlic and yogurt. Drink plenty of fluids. Drink a glass of water with one teaspoon of fresh lemon juice and one teaspoon of liquid chlorophyll on rising and before bed. At least one glass of fresh vegetable juice or green drink a day with lots of homemade soups containing many vegetables and potatoes. One teaspoon of honey taken once a day and even applied locally is excellent, as it has antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antibiotic characteristics (use only raw honey for this purpose).
Nutrition: • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids (3 g the first hour, then 1 g every two hours for first few days, up to bowel tolerance; then keep to 3-6 g per day), zinc (30-60 mg daily), beta carotene (100,000 IU first three days, then reduce to 25,000 IU for several weeks), evening primrose oil, garlic capsules, vitamin A and E emulsion, silicea, mineral complex with calcium. • S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) is an amino acid compound found to be an effective anti-inflammatory and pain reliever.
Proteolytic enzymes are often effective for severe or chronic inflammation and may be taken even if antibiotics are used (four capsules, four times daily for several days to one week, taken away from meals). If proteolytic enzymes bother the gastrointestinal tract, try bromelain in large dosages (1 g), but still take on an empty stomach away from meals.
Dr. Chaitow’s nutritional strategy is as follows: Inflammation as a phenomenon depends upon the presence of substances called leukotrienes, which the body manufactures from arachidonic acid (an essential fatty acid). The vast majority of arachidonic acid in the body derives from animal proteins and fats, and a simple nutritional strategy that reduces or eliminates these from the diet can markedly reduce inflammation when it is excessive or chronic. Another way of helping this to take place is to eat oily fish (mackerel, herring, salmon) and/or to take supplemental eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) capsules derived from such fish. EPA reduces the production of leukotrienes.
Cutting out red meat and poultry skin, as well as full-fat dairy products, and eating fish can also improve the levels of inflammation being experienced.
Aromatherapy: Chamomile, lavender, frankincense, myrrh.
Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy. Rescue Remedy Cream® for skin inflammation, if used on unbroken skin.
Herbs: A range of anti-inflammatory herbs are available and should be selected depending upon the site of the inflammation. For example, in the lining of the digestive system, use herbs such as chamomile, lemon balm, licorice, or meadowsweet. For the skin, use calendula, St. John’s wort, or plantain. For rheumatic or arthritic problems, use willow bark, meadowsweet, or wild yam. • Sea cucumber (bêche-de-mer) has specific anti-inflammatory compounds found to be effective with arthritic and joint conditions. • Yarrow is an anti-arthritic and antispasmodic herb that has a long tradition of use for arthritis and other joint diseases. • The Ayurvedic herb Boswellia serrata has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation in arthritis.
Homeopathy: Aconite, Belladonna, Ferrum phos., Sulfur.
Hydrotherapy: • Contrast application (apply daily). In the early stages of inflammation, place an ice bag over inflamed area or immerse in ice water.
Professional Care
The following therapies should only be provided by a qualified health professional: Acupuncture (Increases endorphin levels in joints and other regions of the body, and therefore may be highly effective in treating inflammatory disease conditions), Detoxification Therapy (Inflammation is usually a congested condition, but detoxification depends on the specifics of the situation; in other words, what is the problem in the body?), Enzyme Therapy, Light Therapy, Magnetic Therapy (Exposure to negative magnetic field may help reduce inflammation), Naturopathic Medicine, and Oxygen Therapy.
Reader Feedback
Ien Van H. writes: “Thanks for an excellent e-zine. I like the honesty and the balanced approach: Mind, soul, and body. Good stuff!”
My thanks to Ien and everyone else who’s written me in recent weeks commending the tone and direction The Health Plus Letter is going in. I’m gratified to know how well-received it is. My thanks, too, to all of you who are forwarding it on to others and encouraging them to subscribe. Due entirely to satisfied, word-of-mouth recommendations (as I am entirely too busy to properly promote it; something I intend to rectify soon), its circulation continues to increase, and I truly appreciate it.
Dayna H. asks: “I really enjoy your newsletters. I know you’re not a doctor, but can you offer an opinion or website where I can get information about migraines?”
For anyone who suffers from migraine or other types of headache, I strongly recommend the eBook Burton Goldberg’s Definitive Guide to Headaches, which is currently on sale for only $9.95 and available at http://www.1healthyworld.com/ebooks/Headache-Book-Info.cfm - the information it contains is second to none, and I’m not just saying that because I sell it.
Marilyn M. writes: “The doctor my husband and I see has fallen into the barrel with the others who are falsely accused. His license has been suspended for one year, with four years probation.”
Unfortunately, what happened to Marilyn’s doctor is not an isolated experience. Innovative, holistic and integrative physicians continue to be targeted by the medical establishment (often through state medical boards, which are notorious for such attacks) solely for the fact that they are achieving results outside of the normal box of prescription drugs and surgery. To anyone whose physician(s) may be so targeted, I urge you to become involved. A good way to start is to visit the organizations listed above in the Medical F/r/e/edom section. But you can also write your local, state, and federally elected representatives, and get others to join you in creating petitions, etc. Like any other f/r/e/edom, medical f/r/e/edom will not be ours until we claim it.
