Health News and Commentary
Scientists Discover Steep Rise in Brain Diseases Over 20 Years
Scientists recently reported that there has been a dramatic increase in the incidence of brain diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s over 20 years. The incidence of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia was found to have increased by 300 percent among men, and by 90 percent in women, while cases of Parkinson’s increased by 50% in both men and women. The study, conducted by researchers at Southampton Univer/sity in England, covered the incidence of brain diseases in the England, the US, Japan, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain between the years 1979-1997.
According to Professor Colin Pritchard, one of the study’s authors, environmental pollutants are the cause of the increase, which mirrors the increase in the overall incidence of cancers among men and women, as well. The study, which was published in the journal Public Health, cites rises in levels of pesticides, industrial effluents, domestic waste, car exhausts and other pollutants, as the primary culprits.
The researchers stress that its figures take account of the fact that people are living longer and that they also made allowances for the fact that diagnoses of such ailments have improved. According to Pritchard, genetic causes could be ruled out because any changes to DNA would take hundreds of years to take effect. “It must be the environment,” he says.

[Comment: The evidence is overwhelming that the increased proliferation of environmental toxins is directly related to the corresponding increase in chronic, degenerative diseases. That is why detoxification therapies that reduce the body’s overall toxic burden can play such a vital role in helping to prevent and reverse such conditions.]
Imagination Found To Reduce Pain in Children
New research published in the journal Pain indicates that guided imagery can significantly reduce post-operative pain and anxiety among children. The study involved 73 children between the ages of 7 and 12 who were scheduled to have their tonsil and/or adenoids out. Prior to surgery, the children were divided into two groups, with one group given video and audiotapes three weeks beforehand that taught them deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and guided imagery techniques, which the children then practiced “between two and eight times prior to surgery, and repeated it 1 to 4 hours after surgery and in the home 22 to 24 hours after leaving the hospital.”
Though both groups were also given painkillers, the children in the guided imagery “reported significantly less pain and anxiety after listening to the audiotape immediately after surgery,” and had a similar effect at home.

[Comment: This study is just the latest in a large body of research that documents the ability of our minds to influence our overall health. In a number of cases, children and adults have undergone major surgeries without the use of any type of painkiller or anesthesia and experienced no pain whatsoever due to their practice of guided imagery and hypnotherapy techniques. Our imagination is our primary tool for shaping and creating the reality of our lives. All too often, however, it is relegated as something appropriate only to preschool children, who are told as soon as possible that their imaginings are “only make-believe.” Most people accept that injunction and in the process give up their dreams. I hope you aren’t among them.]

Learning To Heal
Many years ago, I would invariably come down with a cold around either Thanksgiving or Christmas. Often the symptoms were so severe that they prevented me from traveling home for the holidays. On such occasions, I received calls from my parents and 11 brothers and sisters, who told me they loved me and regretted that I wasn’t home with them. These calls always cheered me up, and inevitably I would recover my health within another one or two days.
At the time, I had no idea why I regularly manifested colds during the holidays, especially as I usually passed the rest of each year in a good state of health. But one year, as Christmas approached and I was already under the weather with another cold that had decided me to once again remain in Manhattan for the holidays, I received a call from my brother Michael. Mike is not one to mince words. When I told him I was sick, he scoffed, “Of course you are. You always get sick on the holidays.” That simple statement startled me awake to what was really going on with me. After Mike hung up, I suddenly perceived how the colds I contracted each year served an ulterior purpose, one that until that moment I hadn’t perceived and probably wouldn’t have been able to admit even if I had.
Growing up, I unconsciously became a caretaker to my siblings. This was not a role that was always welcomed by them, but I played it all the same. As a result, I was sometimes resented by my brothers and sisters. When that occurred, I felt hurt. But I always kept my feelings to myself. And, since no communication was occurring, I also felt unloved. For the most part, I was unconscious to all of this, and overall considered myself a happy person. In actuality, I was, but that didn’t negate the hurt I was suppressing, and thus not healing.
That day, as I awoke to the insight Mike’s blunt criticism had provided me with, I realized that the only reason why I developed colds during the holidays was so that I could be told by my family that they loved me, something they always did before they said goodbye when they called me. On a conscious, adult level, I already knew they loved me, and that I loved them, but n/o/w I saw that within me was a sad and unhealed little boy who wasn’t so sure about that. Simply becoming aware of this was enough to heal the situation, and since that day I have rarely been sick during the holidays.
The realization I just described was the first time I became aware of the hidden purposes illness can have in our lives. Since then, I have become increasingly aware of such purposes and continue to explore the various ways that repressed or improperly expressed emotions and other unresolved life issues can manifest as illness. Conversely, I am today very much aware of the opportunities illness can provide for healing other areas of our life, as well. Here’s another example of this from my own life.
Long time readers of this newsletter kn/o/w that shortly after my sister passed away last year, I developed a constrictive pain in my right shoulder and upper arm. Initially, it manifested simply as a minor ache, but within a few weeks it resulted in my not being able to lift my right arm completely above my head, or fully extend my arm out from my side. I also was unable to reach behind my back to tuck my shirt into my pants. I knew that somehow this affliction was related to the loss of my sister, but having deeply grieved her passing, I chose to allow whatever hidden meaning it had to reveal itself in its own time. In the meantime, though, I did consult with a chiropractor, MD, body-worker, and a medical intuitive. None of them were able to relieve the pain or improve the mobility of my arm and shoulder. And I intuitively rejected the various diagnoses they gave me as to what was causing the limitation. Eventually, I decided to just let the situation be, trained myself to become proficient with my left hand so that I could use it to tuck in my shirt and use my computer’s mouse, and life went on. The pain went away, but the lack of mobility did not. I knew it was a reminder of another lesson I had yet to learn from my sister’s passing, and that it was not for me to push for the answer.
Then, not long ago, I entered into an unexpected but very welcome experience that has allowed me to open my heart to a deeper level of love and happiness than my norm (which, if I do say so myself, happens to be very loving and happy). The experience is still very new, but in the few short weeks that it’s progressed, I have gained all sorts of boons, including new avenues of abundance, and greater insights into my spiritual nature. In many ways, it’s as if I’ve stepped through a doorway into a new level of being, and the more I ground myself within it, the more my love and joy expand and the quicker my life moves in the direction of my goals and dreams. All without the need for effort on my part, so long as I allow myself to trust the experience. (On a few occasions, I’ve failed miserably, and the repercussions have come fast and furious, forcing me to quickly move back into trust and acceptance.)
One morning not very long ago, as I contemplated all the things I have to be grateful for as a direct result of this experience, I was astonished to discover that my shoulder and arm were suddenly almost back to normal. I’ve completely regained my full arm strength and can n/o/w easily and painlessly extend my arm in all direction. Only a slight, residual tightness remains, reminding me that the lesson – my need to be more open to and trusting of love – isn’t over.
The recovery of my arm and shoulder is completely due to the experience I’m referring to, for I have done nothing else to heal myself. I recently shared this with my friend Dr. Valerie Hunt and she told me in no uncertain terms what caused my healing to occur. Namely that my shoulder is where I stored my remaining grief and sorrow for the loss of my sister, but n/o/w that I’ve allowed myself to open further to love, I no longer have a need to do so, and so the literally frozen energy has been transmuted into an energy that is unrestricted and light.
Would I have found my way into this new experience had my arm and shoulder not become restricted? I think so. But by having the daily constant reminder the restriction gave me, I think I was more receptive to the impulse my Soul, if you will, was giving me to once again step beyond my comfort zone. But had I resisted this new experience once it took me over, I am certain my arm and shoulder would remain unhealed, and most likely would have deteriorated even further.
What I’ve shared is not something that is unusual, though the experience I’m n/o/w in certainly is special for me. I kn/o/w any other people who have had similar healings occur once they discovered and accepted the lessons that were inherent in their illness. In future issues, I will examine how each of us can become more aware of such lessons, and what we can do perceive the lessons before illness sets in.

Self-Care Tips for Managing and Preventing Anxiety
Anxiety is a sense of fear and, in some cases, a feeling of impending doom. The term anxiety disorder refers to a category of disturbances that includes generalized anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. A panic attack is an acute anxiety episode that may be accompanied by sweating, shortness of breath, hot or cold flashes, heart palpitations, and other forms of discomfort. Anxiety disorders occur in people of all ages, but appear to be more common among women. The exact cause is complex, involving constitutional factors, emotional stress, biochemical imbalances, and environmental triggers.
Symptoms: The occurrence of a panic attack is often unpredictable, but it may be associated with certain situations such as driving a car. Anxiety is an emotion that may feature excessive worry, sleep disturbances, shakiness, ritualistic behavior, fear of being alone or in public places, impatience, easy distraction, and great apprehension concerning the welfare of loved ones. Associated physical symptoms include racing pulse, heart palpitations, shortness or rapidity of breath, sweating, dry mouth, numbness and tingling of the hands and feet or cold/clammy hands, lightheadedness or dizziness, fatigue, trembling, indigestion, and diarrhea.
Self-Care
Diet:Assess diet for excessive consumption of stressor foods such as: refined sugars, honey, maple syrup, or cow’s milk products. Consume vegetable soups, broths, and a wide variety of green and yellow vegetables. Add more complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, beans, seeds, and nuts.
Nutritional Therapy: • Calcium • Magnesium • Vitamin B complex • Pantothenic acid • Adrenal glandulars • Kidney glandulars • 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan). GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), an amino acid, can also improve mood by increasing levels of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin (a mood regulator).
Flower Essences: Flower essences may prove helpful. Aspen is for apprehension, foreboding, and fear of unkn/o/wn origin while mimulus is for fear of kn/o/wn things, shyness, and timidity. Red chestnut is used for excessive anxiety and over caring for others. Rescue RemedyÒ(combination formula) for general stress from anxiety; Rock Rose for terror and panic from kn/o/wn fear.
Herbs: • Panax ginseng has a nutritive or tonic effect on the adrenal glands, improving blood flow to the brain and reducing the stress associated with mental/emotional issues. • Valerian root, an herb/al tranquilizer and muscle relaxant, is another good agent for calming the nervous system. It helps balance mood swings and is not habit forming. Valerian-hops combination formulas are good daytime sedatives because they don’t interfere with reflex actions. • Passionflower is another mild sedative that helps reduce anxiety, high blood pressure, nervous tension, and muscle tension, and encourages deep, restful sleep. • Extract of the kava-kava plant, an herb/al tranquilizer native to Polynesia, can lower anxiety levels and alleviate panic disorder and general tension in as quickly as a week. • St. John’s wort, a highly popular remedy for depression, has proven effective for anxiety and mood swings as well.
Homeopathy: Aconite, Actaea rac., Drosera, Calc carb., Sulfur.
Hypnotherapy: Self-hypnosis to impart to the mind imagery designed to bring about deep levels of relaxation.
Meditation: Develops the mind’s ability to stop anxiety at its source.
Professional Care
The following therapies should only be provided by a qualified health professional: Environmental Medicine, Magnetic Field Therapy, Mind/Body Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine, Orthomolecular Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Rolfing may also be very helpful if used in conjunction with psychotherapy.
Reader Feedback
Cosette T writes:
“Your articles on spirituality and heavy metal contamination were both excellent, as usual. In the former, the common denominator in all the methods of 'reconnection/relaxation' mentioned, i.e., prayer, meditation, nature walks, etc, is deep breathing. Deep breathing itself sets in motion a cascade of chemical actions and reactions that improve everything from mood to immune function to increasing the lymphatic flow by 15 times. That something as simple as deep breathing could so profoundly affect the mind and body is fascinating.
In the latter, listing the most accurate testing methods to determine heavy metal toxicity would have been a good addition to an already excellent article.”
The power of the breath to heal and transform consciousness is something I’ve been exploring for a few years n/o/w and is something I will eventually write about in this newsletter. As for methods for determining heavy metal toxicity, the primary tests involve blood, hair, liver, stool, and/or urine analysis, and should only be conducted by a trained physician in this area, usually in conjunction with a qualified laboratory. My thanks to Cosette for her excellent comments and suggestions.

Book: Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins. Robbins is one of my favorite novelists, and this is my favorite novel that he has written. A very witty, thought-provoking, and entertaining romp through the history of perfume and one man’s quest to achieve physical immortality. I just started reading it again last night for the third time, and am enjoying it all over again.
