For Zachary on His Bar Mitzvah
Dear Zach,
Congratulations on being called to the Torah today as a Bar Mitzvah. Today marks a milestone in your life, an achievement that both recognizes all youhave experienced and achieved in your past, and which serves as a beacon for your future as it calls to you, waiting for you to shape it according to your truest dreams and wishes. You may not realize it quite yet, but with time you will look back on today and what it means and recognize that it is a time of important passage. For who you were before today, while still continuing to serve you, is no longer who you are and will be as you journey on into your life, creating your destiny. In short, today you ceased being only a boy and began your journey into being a man.
I've always recognized you to be someone of great intelligence and talent, Zach, and also someone possessed with the awareness to discern what is important and valuable in life, beginning and ending with your family and friends. That's why I've always made time to share conversations with you. I enjoy them very much. So, in a way, consider this letter another conversation and as you read, notice the thoughts you have, for they are your responses.
Just as your Bar Mitzvah marks an important event in your life, so too do all the great world religions and cultures celebrate similar rites for their yo/ung men as they embark on the same journey of self-discovery you are n/o/w embarked upon. In fact, in the Native American cultures that I am a small part of on my mother=s side, the males of the tribe go through four such ceremonies. The first occurs soon after birth, when they celebrate the naming ceremony. Then, when they are your age, Native American boys participate in the first of 3 pivotal vision quests. In each of them, they turn inward and spend time praying and fasting, seeking to align themselves with their destiny, using their talents in service of themselves and of their community. This is how they discover their true purpose in life. And at the completion of each vision quest, if it is successful, they name themselves in accord/ance with what their visions reveal to them. The 2nd vision quest occurs when the men turn 21, and the last occurs at the end of midlife, when they enter into fellowship with the elders of the community. At each juncture in their life, they discover their true purpose anew, and so, ideally, are better able to fulfill it, fulfilling themselves in the process.
Similar events are celebrated in other cultures and religious traditions, too, but they are less obvious in our modern world and within the Judeo-Christian traditions. Even so, they still exist. And they also exist in the great heroic tales told in every age, as well as in many of the books you and I have both enjoyed reading. A scholar named Joseph Campbell wrote a wonderful book about this entitled The Hero of a Thousand Faces. It's a scholarly text and it would probably bore you today, but in the future-say when you're college age-you might enjoy reading it. Basically, what the book reveals is that, in all the great myths and tales throughout history, the main characters always journeys through the same pivotal moments or passages in order to fulfill his or her quest and return home their community's hero. Aside from birth, the first pivotal event, which your being called to the Torah today mirrors, is known as The Loss of Innocence. It sounds frightening, perhaps, and to a certain extent, it can be. But in a deeper sense, it means something far more wonderful. For it is at this time that the hero - in this case, you! - starts to perceive that something in his life has changed. It is a time when you will find yourself taking on more, and sometimes even different, responsibilities. Some boys, faced with such a time, long to reject it. That's normal, and it's also very valid, for it can be a frightening thing to move past what is familiar and comfortable to us. But the simple truth is that life is a journey and it doesn’t stand still for anyone. And as we pass through it, it is required of us to become what our destiny waits for us to become, so that we can fulfill our life's mission. What those who resist the responsibilities they find suddenly thrust upon them fail to recognize is a very powerful sec/ret: With the acceptance of responsibility comes Freedom. For what is responsibility if not the ability to respond? And if you are able to respond to life events as you so choose, then you are indeed free.
Needless to say, very few people can actually claim to truly be fr/ee, yet all of us have the potential to create freedom in our lives. Certainly, you do. So don't be afraid of responsibility. Welcome it. But always make sure it is a true responsibility, and not simply an obli/gation someone else would like you to bear the burden of (like doing something you hate doing, just because it's expected of you-the important responsibilities in your life will always come to you from inside yourself).
So far, what I’ve written might not sound like all that much fun. So n/o/w I’ll share another secret with you. In order for the hero to fulfill his or her mission, he or she must discover his or her special talents and then commit him/herself to using them. You can see this, for example, in the Harry Potter novels. As a baby, Harry survived the attack of the most powerful sorcerer in the world, even though his parents were killed by it. It left him confused, sad, angry, and so forth, and also scarred for life with a jagged lightning bolt across his forehead. The scar is a powerful reminder to him every day of his life that his destiny awaits him—namely once and for all doing battle with Voldemort. But how is he possibly able to do that successfully? There is only one way. By discovering and then developing his talents.
You too have special talents that you too can discover and develop. If you do, the life ahead of you will be rich beyond words to describe. But that’s not the sec/ret. The sec/ret is that this is true of every single human being. The sad part, though, is that very, very many people don't know that about themselves. And, many of them, even when they are told it's true, simply refuse to believe it. Why? There are many reasons that can be supplied, but the one that I find is most often ignored is this one: They did not want the responsibility that their special talents came with. And they also lacked a real dream about how and what they wanted their lives to be like.
Don’t be one of those people. Instead, commit yourself to dreaming big dreams and then use your talents to make your dreams come true. Some people will tell you that this is selfish, but they will be wrong. For there is only one way that you can make your dreams come true, and that is by discovering and using your talents. And when you do that, you will also benefit those around you. And the positive energy you will surround yourself with in the process will inspire and enliven those you come in contact with. So how can that be selfish?
My wish for you, Zach, on this the day of your Bar Mitzvah, is that you make all of your dreams come true. I know you can do so. But, just in case you are wondering what your special talents might be, here’s a clue for discovering them: Ask yourself what you love doing. I guar/antee you, when you answer that question, that you will realize you have a talent for doing it. There may be a bunch of things you love doing. In fact, knowing you, I'd be surprised if that isn’t the case. And you’ll see you have a talent for each one of them. So develop them. That’s the hard part—doing the work that is necessary to make your dreams come true. As the saying goes, when it comes to success, talent and inspiration are only ten percent of the solution. The other 90 percent is perspiration (hard work). Just like Harry Potter learning to master his skills at Hogwarts. Or Derek Jeter sacrificing time with his friends when he grew up in order to practice, practice, practice baseball so that he would one day be good enough to play for the Yankees.
One last word on this subject, Zach. Most people you will meet in your life, even many of those you will love and be close to, won’t have a clue about what I’m talking about. Or, if they do, they will still ignore it, having any number of excuses to rationalize why they ne/ver fulfilled their dreams. That's OK. You can't change them and you’ll only be wasting your time if you try. Focus on your own goals and dreams, instead.
And here's the last and most important sec/ret I wish to impart to you today: No matter what it is you choose to dream, you already have everything you need to make that dream a reality. You just have to know where to look for it. Where does such wonderful treasure lie? Inside you. Always inside you, closer than your own heartbeat and always ready to serve you. So take hold of it and soar!
Health and Blessings!
