Thank You!
I wish to thank all of you who emailed me to express your condolences during my time of loss and grieving over the passing of my sister Andrea. I heard from hundreds of readers, and the kindness and support you expressed literally moved me to tears. Words cannot adequately express my gratitude and appreciation.

Andrea was my greatest Teacher during these past five years and her loving and indomitable Spirit continues to inform my heart. Beginning next week, I will share my recollections of Andrea’s heroic sojourn in a column entitled The Power of A Human Spirit. I want you to know that she passed peacefully and consciously on the afternoon of September 24 of this year, attended by my sisters Laura and Cindy At the exact moment that she did so, the Sun broke through the clouds, its rays streaming in through her bedroom window to shine upon her face. The heavens literally parted to receive her.

With this somewhat abbreviated issue, I am returning to work. Things will be back to normal next week.

As always, please send me with your comments and suggestions. You can email me at larry@1healthyworld.com
. And, if you like it, please spread the word about The Health Plus Letter.

Quote of the Day

"I love you. See you in Heaven."
My sister Andrea’s last words to me before she passed over.

Microchip Touted as Potential Alternative to Oral Medications

The following story appeared last week on the BBC’s website:

"Scientists in the United States have developed a new way of taking medicines which could improve the effectiveness of some treatments including HIV therapy.

Writing in the journal Nature Materials they describe a drug-containing microchip which can be implanted in the body. This then releases the medication slowly so the patient no longer has to take any pills.

Most drugs are still taken orally - but this has drawbacks, the biggest one being human error. Simply forgetting to take your medicine can seriously affect how well a medicine works. So this new microchip, which is just over a centimetre in length, could provide a way of delivering exactly the right dose at exactly the right time, therefore making the drug work as well as possible.

The chip's surface is covered in little grooves, where drugs can be loaded. It is then covered with different types of polymer which slowly biodegrade releasing each dose at a different time. This type of drug delivery could be very useful for patients who have to take many different tablets at specific times each day, for instance those with HIV. It could also help patients suffering from dementia who cannot remember when to take their drugs.

So far the researchers have tested the chip in the lab with the anti-clotting agent heparin. They found that just one chip can be used for up to 140 days. If this works as well for other drugs then clinical trials of the new implant will start soon."

[Comment: You can’t make this stuff up. Talk about a schism between medicine and nature! I can only imagine the side-effects that will ensue.]

Cell Phones and Wireless Technology May Lead to Senility

Recent research suggests that cell phones and newly emerging wireless technology may cause senility, particularly among the current teen^ge generation, due to their heavy cell ph^ne use. According to researcher Leif Salford, who oversaw the study, which was conducted at Sweden’s Lund Univ^rsity, "the voluntary exposure of the brain to microwaves from hand-held mobile phones is the largest human biological experiment ever."

The study broke new ground by examining at how low levels of microwaves cause proteins to leak across the blood-brain barrier. Salford and his team spent 15 years investigating the health risks caused by the microwave radiation involved in cell phones and wireless technology use. "Their previous studies proved radiation could open the blood-brain barrier, allowing a protein called albumin to pass into the brain. Their latest work goes a step further, by showing the process is linked to serious brain damage." According to Professor Salford, although the long-term effects remain unproven, and it is possible the neurons could repair themselves in time, neurons that would normally not become "senile" until people reached their 60s may do so when they were in their 30s. He added that he deliberately refrained from publicizing his work to avoid alarm.

[Comment: At the same time that this study is being released, continued research examining the potential health risks posed by cell phones is being scaled back, due pressure exerted by the cell ph^ne and wireless technology industries. The findings of Salford and his team are definitely cause for concern, to be balanced with the conveniences these new technologies provide.]

Research Suggests Tai Chi May Help Prevent Shingles

According to a study published last month in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, regular practice of Tai Chi boosts the body’s immunity to the virus know to trigger outbreaks of shingles. Shingles affects people who experience chicken pox in their youth, and is caused by a strain of herpes virus known as varicella, which lingers in the body, infecting nerve cells. When immunity to the virus occurs, which it often does as people age, shingles can occur, the symptoms of which can last for years.

In the study, conducted by researchers at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA, 36 men and women with an average age of 70 were divided into two groups. One group practiced Tai Chi, which consists of slow and precise movements combined with coordinated breathing, for 45 minutes, three times a week, while the control group did not. Fifteen weeks later, both groups were examined, and it was found that the Tai Chi group "not only felt healthier, but had a boost of up to 50 percent of immune system cells called memory T-cells that are specifically guided to recognize and attack varicella."

[Comment: The boost of immunity experienced by the Tai Chi group in this study is only the latest of many studies showing the health benefits Tai Chi can have on health, which extend far beyond helping those at risk for shingles.]

Writing Found to Help Puncture Wounds to Heal

According to findings presented last month at a conference sponsored by the British Psychological Society, writing about one’s emotional experience can speed up the healing of puncture wounds. The findings were based on a study in which 36 people were divided into two groups. The first group was asked to write about the most upsetting experience they had had, detailing how they felt about it. The other group was instructed to simply write about "trivial things." Both groups did this for 20 minutes a day for three days. Following the exercise, "researchers created a small skin puncture on the participants' upper arms." Two weeks later, both groups were examined, and it was found that the wounds were smaller and healing more quickly, among members of the group that had written about their emotional experiences, compared to the control group. Researchers believed the reason for this was due to the fact that those who’d written about their experiences had been able to reduce stress levels associated with the events they wrote about, as well as helping to resolve the emotions surrounding them, thereby boosting the body’s repair mechanisms.

[Comment: I’ve made use of this practice for decades and can attest to its healing benefits, not to mention the many insights and deeper understandings that have resulted from dealing with my life issues with pen and paper. It’s a powerfully healing technique that is both simple and free.]

Books:
An Open Heart: Practicing Compassion in Everyday Life by The Dalai Lama. This book was recommended to me by my sister. I recommend it to you for its instructive insights into how becoming more compassionate can transform our lives for the betterment of not only ourselves, but all whom we encounter each day.

The Legend of Baggar Vance by Stephen Pressfield. This modern day reinterpretation of the Bhagavad Gita unfolds upon a golf course, as local war hero Rannulph Junah participates in a 36-hole match with gold legends Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. You definitely do not have to be a golfer - I’m not - to enjoy this book, which is far superior to the movie that was made of it. Very moving and well-written!

Humor: Great Moment in Naval Communication

What follows is an actual transcript of a radio conversation between a U.S. naval ship and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland, released by the Chief of Naval Operations on October 10, 1995:

U.S. Ship: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Canadian reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

U.S. Ship: This is the captain of a U.S. Navy ship. I say again, divert your course.

Canadian reply: No. I say again, you divert your course!

U.S. Ship: This is the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea. We are a large warship of the US Navy. Divert your course n-o-w!

Canadian reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

See you next Tuesday.

Health and Blessings!
